Every so often MT poses 60 questions to a local or visiting artist in Toronto who has made our classical music community that much more interesting. They pick and choose. The minimum response is 20 answers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

After moving to Toronto in 2014,\u00a0 tenor Asitha Tennekoon has quickly established himself as an important figure in Toronto\u2019s opera scene. His most recent breakout performance was in Tapestry Opera\u2019s Rocking Horse Winner<\/em>. Other credits include performances with Stratford Summer Music Festival, The Indian River Festival, MY Opera, and Bicycle Opera Project.<\/p>\n

You can hear Tennekoon perform as Harry Benn in The Boatswain\u2019s Mate<\/em> by Toronto\u2019s Opera Five running June 22-25<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The food, not feeling like an outsider even though I just moved here three years ago, patios!<\/p>\n

What are three things that Toronto doesn\u2019t have but should?<\/h3>\n

Tropical weather in that Nov-April stretch….<\/p>\n

An ocean and a beach<\/p>\n

Better public transport<\/p>\n

Name the musical equivalent to junk food<\/h3>\n

Recently for me, that\u2019s been Dancehall music, and regular club dance music. Just get me a filthy beat, and I\u2019m good to go!<\/p>\n

Default drink\/cocktail of choice?<\/h3>\n

Red vino is always good company. I\u2019ll have some Hendrick\u2019s after a long week. Starting to experiment with some Scotch now\u2026we\u2019ll see where that goes!<\/p>\n

Name your favourite concert hall\/venue in Toronto<\/h3>\n

Koerner Hall so far. It\u2019s a beautiful space, and the acoustics are so good! As one famous Toronto-based conductor said\u2026 “You can hear a fish fart in there!”<\/p>\n

Name your favourite concert hall\/venue anywhere<\/h3>\n

The Lionel Wendt Theatre back home in Sri Lanka. It\u2019s a great hall in every way, and also holds a very special place in my heart. I\u2019ve performed there since I was six years old and have so many fond memories, and formative experiences on that stage.<\/p>\n

Your role models?<\/h3>\n

More than idolizing any individuals, I prefer to admire and emulate individual characteristics and personality traits.<\/p>\n

Your favourite sound?<\/h3>\n

I grew up close to the ocean. Every night as I fell asleep I\u2019d hear the waves roll in and crashing in the distance. That\u2019s still one of my favourite sounds!<\/p>\n

Your least favourite sound?<\/h3>\n

Scratchy violins!!<\/p>\n

Your favourite smells?<\/h3>\n

Salty ocean air, fresh fruit, garlic, old books, coffee.<\/p>\n

The dumbest thing that you\u2019ve ever done to your hair?<\/h3>\n

Shaved it all off. No regrets though!<\/p>\n

If you could board a plane this afternoon, where would it be taking you?<\/h3>\n

Overthinking everything<\/p>\n

Arrogance. The inability to talk about anything other than themselves and what they\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n

How do you know when you can trust someone?<\/h3>\n

Trust your instincts, and be mindful of how they talk about other people who aren\u2019t present.<\/p>\n

What are you the most proud of?<\/h3>\n

I managed to trick my nephews and niece into thinking I\u2019m cool!<\/p>\n

What are you the least proud of?<\/h3>\n

\u2026not being as cool as my nephews and niece think I am\u2026<\/p>\n

What is the best thing about your work?<\/h3>\n

There\u2019s an amazing thrill that comes with creating something together with a bunch of other people. I also love the different challenges and sense of fulfillment going from singing something like Bach to premiering a new opera, for example.<\/p>\n

What is the worst thing about your work?<\/h3>\n

Being far away from my family and homeland.<\/p>\n

The talent that you wish you possessed?<\/h3>\n

I really wish I could tap-dance!<\/p>\n

What are you listening to as you answer these questions?<\/h3>\n

Regina Spektor\u2019s album Begin To Hope<\/em><\/p>\n

What musical instrument do you secretly long to play?<\/h3>\n

The cello, and maybe drums in a rock band!<\/p>\n

What sport did you give up and why?<\/h3>\n

Cricket. Didn\u2019t have time for that on top of tennis, music, debating, drama.<\/p>\n

What is the game that you\u2019re best at?<\/h3>\n

Battleship!<\/p>\n

What is the one animal that scares you the most?<\/h3>\n

Snakes<\/p>\n

If you had a motto, what would it be?<\/h3>\n

Getting pushed into the deep end of a swimming pool by someone who didn\u2019t know I couldn\u2019t swim.<\/p>\n

Lauridsen. Any pieces with repeated ninth chords just in different inversions….so\u2026Lauridsen.<\/p>\n

The strangest road you\u2019ve ever travelled?<\/h3>\n

Puberty!<\/p>\n

The first album that made you love music?<\/h3>\n

An album of Bach Organ Works. I played it late at night and didn\u2019t realize the volume on the stereo system was on full. The first track was the Toccata & Fugue in D minor\u2026I\u2019ll never forget that experience\u2026neither will the neighbours!<\/p>\n

Three pieces, songs, or arias that you could listen to on repeat for an hour?<\/h3>\n

Schumann Piano Quintet in E flat, Shostakovich String Quartet No. 8, Batter My Heart<\/em> from Dr Atomic by John Adams.<\/p>\n
