OTTAWA \u2014 This evening, diverse members of Canada\u2019s classical music community were honoured at the Juno Awards Ceremony.<\/p>\n

New Orford String Quartet<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brahms: String Quartets, Op. 51 NOS. 1 & 2<\/em><\/p>\n

With their recordings of Brahms\u2019s popular Op. 51 string quartets, the New Orford String Quartet nabbed their first Juno award. During most of the year, the members are disbanded and sit in the orchestras of Montreal, Toronto, and Detroit. However, the foursome remains committed to giving performances across Canada; at this point, they have concert engagements into late April.<\/p>\n

In his remarks at this afternoon\u2019s Classical Nominees\u2019 Showcase<\/em>, composer Christos Hatzis paid homage to the Aboriginal Canadians who, in a dark chapter of history, had been mistreated by the country. Hatzis weaved the stories they shared with him into this composition; as we know now, this collaboration yielded a Juno-winning result.<\/p>\n

Recorded live in concert at Montreal\u2019s <\/em>Maison symphonique<\/em>, the Decca engineers turned out a Juno-winning recording which captures the true-to-life acoustics of the concert hall.<\/em><\/p>\n

A comparative newcomer among his co-nominees, Nobles has previously won honours along the west coast of North America as well as in Australia. At this afternoon\u2019s Nominees\u2019 Showcase, <\/em>he vowed to be back at next year\u2019s Juno Awards.<\/p>\n

Of note: only composers Jordan Nobles and Christos Hatzis were present to collect awards. But before\u00a0Hatzis could make it to the stage to accept on behalf of the WSO, the host, Tom Power, moved into another category. Soprano\u00a0Krisztina Szabo reported via twitter<\/a> that he was eventually allowed to make an acceptance speech.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
