On the symphonic front, the big news is the appearance of Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, in Berlioz\u2019s <em>Symphonie Fantastique<\/em>, paired with the Beethoven <em>Piano Concerto No. 2<\/em> with Emanuel Ax (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/boston-symphony-orchestra\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mar. 5<\/a>). The Toronto Symphony Orchestra\u2019s <em>New Creations Festival<\/em> starts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/tso-new-creations-festival-tanya-tagaq\/\" target=\"_blank\">March 4<\/a>. The brilliant Scottish-Italian violinist Nicola Benedetti appears with the Venice Baroque Orchestra at Koerner Hall (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/royal-conservatoryistituto-italiano-di-cultura-nicola-benedetti-and-venice-baroque-orchestra\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mar. 3<\/a>). Sir Andr\u00e1s Schiff is in town for a Schubert recital (<a href=\"https:\/\/performance.rcmusic.ca\/event\/sir-andras-schiff-2017\" target=\"_blank\">Mar. 5<\/a>). Baritone Russell Braun and violist Barry Shiffman are guests with the Trio Arkel in a program of Respighi, Debussy, and Honegger (<a href=\"http:\/\/trioarkel.com\/calendar\/\" target=\"_blank\">Feb. 28<\/a>). Canadian cellist \u00a0St\u00e9phane T\u00e9treault plays Saint-Saens Cello Concerto with Sinfonia Toronto (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/sinfonia-toronto-4\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mar. 4<\/a>). He sings in <em>Il Tramonto<\/em> and <em>Trois Ballades de Francois Villon.<\/em> Violist Barry Shiffman and violinist Jamie Kruspe perform Debussy\u2019s <em>String Quartet in G minor<\/em>. On the program are Rachmaninoff <em>Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op. 42, Morceaux de Fantasie: Melodie, Op. 3, No. 3<\/em>, and <em>Lullaby, Op. 16<\/em>. When Kr\u00e1sa was deported to the concentration camp in Terezin, he smuggled a score into the camp, and it was performed over fifty times by the children of the camp. The CCOC presentation also includes footage of <em>The Lady in No. 6,<\/em> a documentary on Terezin survivor concert pianist Alice Sommer Herz and her son Raphael, and their experience with Brundib\u00e1r in the camp. Her story is extremely moving and emotionally uplifting. TIFF Lightbox Cinema 4. 6:30 p.m. $14<\/p>\n<p>As part of TIFF Cinematheque&#8217;s <em>Not Reconciled: The Films of Jean Marie Straub and Daniele Huillet<\/em> which runs from March 3 to April 2 is a showing of<em> Chronicles of Anna Magdalena Bach<\/em>. \u00a0It stars the late virtuoso harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt as Johann Sebastian Bach and Christiane Lang as his second wife Anna Magdalena, whose journal serves as the film&#8217;s narration.
