Every so often MT poses 60 questions to a local or visiting artist in Toronto who has made our classical music community that much more interesting. They pick and choose. The minimum response is 20 answers. A kind of Rorschach personality test, if you will.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

JUNO Award-winning composer Vivian Fung<\/a> has a talent for combining multiple genres and styles into large-scale works that live and breath as reflections of her multicultural background. A frequent visitor to Toronto, her works have been performed all over the world. Recently, her Violin Concerto No. 2<\/em> was commissioned and premiered in February 2015 by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra with Jonathan Crow.<\/p>\n

What are three things about Toronto that make you want to live here?<\/h3>\n

Visiting with relatives (I have lots of relatives here), the FOOD, my musician friends that I have come to know over the years.<\/p>\n

Default drink\/cocktail of choice?<\/h3>\n

Any mocktail, virgin drink.\u00a0 I have had these strange hallucinations when I consume alcohol, probably allergic.\u00a0 I\u2019m actually writing a piece about it soon.\u00a0 I\u2019m what you call a cheap date.<\/p>\n

Your favorite sound?<\/h3>\n

My son Julian\u2019s voice (he\u2019s 19 months old as of writing this).<\/p>\n

Your favourite smells?<\/h3>\n

The waft of freshly baked bread \u2013 when I was living in NY, we lived close to a bakery in Jackson Heights.<\/p>\n

The dumbest thing that you\u2019ve ever done to your hair?<\/h3>\n

The 80s over-fizzed perm.\u00a0 If you are Asian and ever burnt your hair from a perm, you\u2019ll know what I mean.<\/p>\n

The three books that you read that made an impact on you in your formative years?<\/h3>\n

Where was the last place you traveled to for work or pleasure?<\/h3>\n

Music Composition with a minor in piano.<\/p>\n

Your ancestry?<\/h3>\n

Chinese.<\/p>\n

What is the best thing about your work?<\/h3>\n

My son running and playing upstairs.<\/p>\n

What musical instrument do you secretly long to play?<\/h3>\n

Percussion so I can bang out all my aggressions and play with all sorts of toys.<\/p>\n

Have you ever fired a gun? If so, what were the circumstances?<\/h3>\n

NO!<\/p>\n

The strangest road you\u2019ve ever travelled?<\/h3>\n

Travelling the back dirt roads in Yunnan province, China where I was researching music and culture of minority groups there. Planning a return visit soon.<\/p>\n

The first album that made you love music?<\/h3>\n

I forget which recording, but listening to Sacre du Printemps<\/em> for the first time was the defining moment for me.<\/p>\n

The first three things that you do every morning?<\/h3>\n

Hit the snooze button, check on my son, pee.<\/p>\n

The best way to die?<\/h3>\n

Laughing.<\/p>\n
