Musical Toronto\u2019s weekly Critic\u2019s Picks are a fully curated list of some of the best concerts happening now through the end of the week. This is not to say we are the provocateurs of taste, but simply seek to provide a good weekly summary. Happy New Year to all Musical Toronto Readers!\u00a0 With many Torontonians still recovering from Holiday festivities, classical music events are understandably on the sparse side this week. Two are holdovers from last week \u2014 Ross Petty\u2019s Sleeping Beauty<\/em> at the Elgin (Jan 2 to 7<\/a>), and Toronto Operetta Theatre\u2019s Pirates of Penzance<\/em> (Jan 7 & 8<\/a>). No opera yet at the COC, as The Magic Flute<\/em> and G<\/em>\u00f6tterdammerung<\/em> are both in rehearsals. But there are three free noon-hour concerts at the opera house that really showcase the musical diversity in our fair city \u2014\u00a0A Musical Tribute to Bhutan<\/em> (Jan. 3<\/a>), Jetstream\u2019 Jazz<\/em> (Jan. 4<\/a>), and Echo \/ Sap\u2019a<\/em><\/a> featuring First Nation mezzo Marion Newman with pianist Adam Sherkin and violinist Kathleen Kajioka. The Li Delun Music Foundation is putting on its annual New Year\u2019s Concert (Jan. 7<\/a>) at the George Weston Recital Hall. And don\u2019t forget opera on the big screen \u2014 opera fans will find Met Live in HD<\/a> Nabucco<\/em> interesting, starring the great Placido Domingo in the title role. For under $30, you get to experience a Met production in real time \u2014 how cool is that!<\/p>\n

Monday 2<\/h3>\n

Ross Petty Productions<\/span> | Sleeping Beauty<\/em>, at the Elgin Theatre. 7 p.m. $27\u201399. (Repeats daily until Jan 7)<\/p>\n

The musical theatre version of Sleeping Beauty<\/em>, written by Jeremy Diamond and directed by Tracey Flye, with choreography by Julie Tomaino.\u00a0See here<\/a>, for details.<\/p>\n

Tuesday 3<\/h3>\n

Canadian Opera Company<\/span> | Noam Lemish Quartet, at the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, Four Seasons Centre. 12 p.m. Free.<\/p>\n

The COC\u2019s free World Music Series presents The People\u2019s King: A Musical Tribute to Bhutan<\/em>. Arranged for jazz quartet, this multi-movement suite integrates jazz, classical western music, and traditional Bhutanese folk music. See here<\/a> for a PDF of the program. Wednesday 4<\/h3>\n

Thursday 5<\/h3>\n

Canadian Opera Company<\/span> | Echo\/Sap\u2019a<\/em>, at the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, Four Seasons Centre. 12 p.m. Free<\/p>\n

First Nations mezzo Marion Newman presents a concert \u201con the theme of reconciliation, feature works by Canadian composers. Joining her are pianist Adam Sherkin and violinist Kathleen Kajioka. Listing info, here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Friday 6<\/h3>\n

Toronto Operetta Theatre<\/span> | Pirates of Penzance<\/em>, at Jane Mallett Theatre. 8 p.m. $49 – $95.<\/p>\n

The Gilbert and Sullivan operetta that opened last week concludes with three more shows. It stars Colin Ainsworth, tenor (Frederic); Vania Chan, soprano (Mabel); Curtis Sullivan, baritone (Major General); and Elizabeth Beeler, alto (Ruth). Saturday 7<\/h3>\n

Li Delun Music Foundation<\/span> | New Year’s Concert, at George Weston Recital Hall. 7:30 p.m.$30 – $88.<\/p>\n

This concert features a program of chestnuts, including orchestral and operatic selections from Eugene Onegin, Turandot<\/em>, and Rigoletto<\/em>, with tenor Romulo Delgado. The brilliant Chinese pianist Haochen Zhang is the soloist in Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 1<\/em>. Also appearing is Donghua Feng (erhu). Junping Qian conducts the Toronto Festival Orchestra. Met Live in HD<\/span> | Nabucco,<\/em> at participating Cineplex Cinemas. 12:55 p.m. $28<\/p>\n

Met Live in HD presents Nabucco<\/em> by Verdi. It stars the great Placido Domingo, re-invented as a baritone, in the title role. Joining him is dramatic soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska (Abigaille), tenor Russell Thomas (Ismaele), mezzo Jamie Barton (Fenena), and bass Dmitri Belosselskiy (Zaccaria). This is one of the few remaining chances to hear James Levine conduct. Details, here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
