Two are holdovers from last week \u2014 Ross Petty\u2019s <em>Sleeping Beauty<\/em> at the Elgin (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/ross-petty-productions-sleeping-beauty\/2017-01-02\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jan 2 to 7<\/a>), and Toronto Operetta Theatre\u2019s <em>Pirates of Penzance<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/toronto-operetta-theatre-pirates-of-penzance\/2017-01-06\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jan 7 &amp; 8<\/a>). No opera yet at the COC, as <em>The Magic Flute<\/em> and <em>G<\/em><em>\u00f6tterdammerung<\/em> are both in rehearsals. But there are three free noon-hour concerts at the opera house that really showcase the musical diversity in our fair city \u2014\u00a0<em>A Musical Tribute to Bhutan<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/canadian-opera-company-noam-lemish-quartet\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jan. 3<\/a>), <em>Jetstream\u2019 Jazz<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/files.coc.ca\/pdfs\/concert170104.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Jan. 4<\/a>), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/canadian-opera-company-echosapa\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Echo \/ Sap\u2019a<\/em><\/a> featuring First Nation mezzo Marion Newman with pianist Adam Sherkin and violinist Kathleen Kajioka. The Li Delun Music Foundation is putting on its annual New Year\u2019s Concert (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/east-meets-west-new-years-concert-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jan. 7<\/a>) at the George Weston Recital Hall. And don\u2019t forget opera on the big screen \u2014 opera fans will find <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metopera.org\/metoperafiles\/season\/2016-17\/operas\/nabucco\/synopsis%20and%20cast%20sheets\/hd_synopsis_nabucco_global_and_usa_no_dates.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Met Live in HD<\/a> <em>Nabucco<\/em> interesting, starring the great Placido Domingo in the title role. For under $30, you get to experience a Met production in real time \u2014 how cool is that!<\/p>\n<h3>Monday 2<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ross Petty Productions<\/span> | <em>Sleeping Beauty<\/em>, at the Elgin Theatre. 7 p.m. $27\u201399. Arranged for jazz quartet, this multi-movement suite integrates jazz, classical western music, and traditional Bhutanese folk music. The brilliant Chinese pianist Haochen Zhang is the soloist in Rachmaninoff <em>Piano Concerto No. 1<\/em>. Also appearing is Donghua Feng (erhu). Junping Qian conducts the Toronto Festival Orchestra. It stars the great Placido Domingo, re-invented as a baritone, in the title role. Joining him is dramatic soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska (Abigaille), tenor Russell Thomas (Ismaele), mezzo Jamie Barton (Fenena), and bass Dmitri Belosselskiy (Zaccaria). This is one of the few remaining chances to hear James Levine conduct.
