Now that autumn is almost here \u2014 even if the temperature isn\u2019t exactly fall-like \u2014 we can\u2019t wait for our local musical season to gear up!\u00a0 Here are some of the upcoming events that have caught our eye. Not a comprehensive preview by any means, but we&#8217;re always ready to expand our horizons.<\/p>\n<h3>Toronto Symphony Orchestra<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Toronto Symphony Orchestra<\/strong> opens its season on Sept. 21 with American diva <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/opening-night-renee-fleming\/\">Ren\u00e9e Fleming<\/a>, in a program that includes Ravel\u2019s <em>Sheh<\/em><em>\u00e9razade<\/em>, Puccini, Leoncavallo and Rogers and Hammerstein\u2019s <em>The King and I. <\/em>Fleming is phasing out her opera career while continuing to give concerts and recitals. If you want to hear her, don\u2019t wait!\u00a0 Mahler fans should be happy as the TSO is doing its monumental <em>Symphony No. 3<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/mahler-symphony-3\/2016-09-28\/\">Sept. 28-9<\/a>) with the young American mezzo Jamie Barton as soloist. Last in town for a terrific recital with the Toronto Summer Music Festival in July, we\u2019re lucky to have her back so soon. The flamboyant Chinese pianist Yuja Wang is in town <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/tso-yuja-wang\/2016-10-13\/\">Oct. 13 &amp; 15<\/a> for Bartok\u2019s <em>Piano Concerto No. 3<\/em>, paired with Dvorak\u2019s New World Symphony, under the baton of Krzysztof Urbanski. Italian conductor Gianandrea Noseda is back (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/tso-4\/2016-11-17\/\">Nov. 17 &amp; 19<\/a>) to conduct Saint-Saens\u2019 <em>Symphony No. 3 \u201cOrgan Symphony\u201d <\/em>paired with Ravel\u2019s <em>Piano Concerto in G<\/em>. The great Itzhak Perlman plays film music (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/itzhak-perlmans-cinema-serenade\/\">Nov. 22<\/a>).\u00a0 Chinese conductor Long Yu leads the TSO in Shostakovich <em>Symphony No. 5<\/em> and Dvorak\u2019s <em>Cello Concerto<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/tso-dvorak-cello-concerto\/\">Nov. 26-27<\/a>). And it\u2019s always great to have Kent Nagano and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra back, this time with Till Fellner playing Beethoven <em>Piano Concerto No. 4 <\/em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/tso-montreal-symphony-orchestra\/\">Dec. 8)<\/a><em>. <\/em>All performances of TSO at Roy Thomson Hall.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Tafelmusik<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Baroque fans are sure to like <strong>Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra<\/strong>\u2019s opening concert of Handel\u2019s <em>Water Music<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/tafelmusik-handel-water-music\/2016-09-22\/\">Sept. 22-25, 27<\/a>), one of the most enduring of Handel\u2019s works, to take place at Koerner Hall. And there will be a guest maestra, violinist Elisa Citterio. Cellist and director Christophe Coin leads the Tafelmusik forces in a cello-centric program of Dittersdorf, Boccherini, CPE Bach and Haydn at their home venue of Trinity St. Paul\u2019s Centre (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/tafelmusik-7\/\">Oct. 5 \u2013 9<\/a>). Don\u2019t miss the excellent Tafelmusik Chamber Choir celebrating their 35<sup>th<\/sup> year in a program of Handel, Steffani, Lully, Rameau and Zelenka (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/tafelmusik-8\/\">Nov. 2-6<\/a>). <em>A Grand Tour of Italy<\/em> is an evening of Italian Baroque pieces, some well-known, others more obscure, scheduled for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/tafelmusik-9\/2016-12-01\/\">Dec. 1 \u2013 4<\/a>, under the guest direction of violinist Rodolfo Richter. Not to be missed is their unique <em>Messiah<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/tafelmusik-handels-messiah-6\/2016-12-14\/\">Dec. 14 &#8211; 17<\/a>) with Ivars Taurins leading a great quartet of soloists \u2013 Amanda Forsythe, Krisztina Szabo, Colin Balzer and Tyler Duncan. Also great fun is their annual Sing-Along Messiah at Massey Hall, in its 30<sup>th<\/sup> season (!) on Dec. 18<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<h3>Canadian Opera Company<\/h3>\n<p>The big news over at the <strong>Canadian Opera Company<\/strong> is the season-opening <em>Norma<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/coc-norma\/2016-10-06\/\">Oct. 6 \u2013 Nov. 5<\/a>) with not one but two great sopranos. American-born and newly minted Canadian citizen Sondra Radvanovsky is currently the definitive Norma on the planet. But she\u2019ll have competition from Elza van den Heever, a superb Leonora with the COC a few seasons back. I plan to go hear both ladies!\u00a0 Paired with the Bellini is the epic-length <em>Ariodante<\/em> for Handel addicts (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/coc-ariodante\/\">Oct. 16 \u2013 Nov. 4<\/a>) starring Alice Coote and Jane Archibald, with Johannes Debus at the helm. The Free Noon Hour Concert Series kicks off with Meet the Young Artists, a showcase for the Ensemble Studio (Sept. 27). Russian bass Dmitry Ivashchenko sings Mussorgsky\u2019s <em>Songs and Dances of Death<\/em> on Oct. 11. Soprano Miriam Khalil and stage director Joel Ivany of Against the Grain Theatre present Osvaldo Golijov\u2019s song cycle <em>Ayre<\/em> (Nov. 10).<\/p>\n<h3>Opera Atelier<\/h3>\n<p>The COC isn\u2019t the only game in town. There\u2019s <strong>Opera Atelier<\/strong>, presenting Purcell\u2019s <em>Dido and Aeneas<\/em>, starring Canadian mezzo Wallis Giunta (Dido), tenor Christopher Enns (Aeneas), and Meghan Lindsay (Belinda). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/opera-atelier-dido-and-aeneas\/2016-10-20\/\">Oct. 20 \u2013 29<\/a> at the Elgin Theatre.<\/p>\n<h3>Voicebox<\/h3>\n<p>If you can forgo sets, costumes, and orchestra, <strong>Voicebox<\/strong> (Opera in Concert) is presenting Bellini\u2019s version of Romeo and Juliet, called <em>I Capuleti e I Montecchi<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/voicebox\/\">Nov. 20<\/a> at the Jane Mallett Theatre, starring Caitlin Wood, Tonatiuh Abrego, and Anita Krause.<\/p>\n<h3>University of Toronto Faculty of Music<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>University of Toronto Faculty of Music\u2019s Opera Division<\/strong> is presenting Offenbach\u2019s <em>Orpheus in the Underworld<\/em>, an amusing spoof of Gluck\u2019s <em>Orfeo ed Euridice<\/em>. With the young, fresh voices at the U of T, it\u2019ll be fun \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/u-of-t-4\/2016-11-26\/\">Nov. 24 \u2013 27<\/a> at the MacMillan Theatre.<\/p>\n<h3>And More:<\/h3>\n<p>Voice buffs can catch Issachah Savage singing <em>Dichterliebe<\/em> under the auspices of <strong>Women\u2019s Musical Club of Toronto<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/wmct-issachah-savage\/\">Oct. 6<\/a>), Nathalie Paulin and Krisztina Szabo at University of Toronto (Oct. 20), Nathalie Paulin and Monica Whicher at Mazzoleni Hall as part of the <em>Songmasters Series<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/rcm-songmasters-series-nathalie-paulin\/\">Oct. 23<\/a>), Deborah Voigt in recital at Koerner Hall (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/rcm-2\/\">Nov. 11<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Off Centre Music Salon<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Russian Salon<\/em> with Joni Henson, Ilana Zarankin, Boris Zarankin and Inna Perkis at Trinity St. Paul\u2019s Centre (Nov. 13), Suzi Leblanc under the auspices of <strong>Music Toronto<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/suzie-leblanc-robert-kortgaard-the-blue-engine-string-quartet\/\">Dec. 1<\/a>), and the annual New Year\u2019s Eve Opera concert, <em>Bravissimo<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/roy-thomson-hall-bravissimo\/\">Dec. 31<\/a>) at Roy Thomson Hall.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019ll be many high profile instrumentalists in town, either in recital or as soloists with orchestra. Among them Yuja Wang with the TSO (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/tso-yuja-wang\/2016-10-13\/\">Oct.13\/15<\/a>), Denis Matsuev at Koerner Hall (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/show-one-productions\/\">Oct. 15<\/a>), a Lang Lang Gala at Koerner Hall (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/rcm-3\/\">Oct. 18<\/a>), Janina Fiakowska (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/janina-fialkowska-2\/\">Oct. 25<\/a>), and Stewart Goodyear (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/datebook\/rcm-stewart-goodyear\/\">Dec. 4<\/a>). In town to conduct <em>Norma<\/em>, Stephen Lord is taking time off to give a masterclass at the Geiger-Torel Room, <strong>University of Toronto Faculty of Music<\/strong> (Oct. 19).\u00a0 Celebrated Canadian harpist Judy Loman\u2019s is having an 80<span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px;line-height: 20px\">th<\/span> birthday celebration and CD launch at Mazzoleni Hall (Oct. 30).
