(Photo: Michael Cooper)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was a night of celebration at the 37th annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards at Toronto&#8217;s Harbour Front Centre, with the <strong>Canadian Opera Company<\/strong> taking home eight statues in the Opera categories, with five for <em>Siegfried<\/em> alone.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by Bruce Dow in the sweltering 35-degree heat, 48 awards, as well as Silver Ticket Award and audience choice awards, were doled out over the three-hour ceremony to a boisterous, cork popping crowd.<\/p>\n<p>The big winner was the COC, who won five for <em>Siegfried<\/em>: Outstanding Production, Outstanding Direction to Fran\u00e7ois Girard, Outstanding Scenic Design to Michael Levine, Outstanding Lighting Design to David Finn and Outstanding Musical Direction to Johannes Debus. <em>La Traviata<\/em> took three for\u00a0Outstanding Performance \u2013 Male to Quinn Kelsey, Outstanding Performance \u2013 Female to Ekaterina Siurina and Outstanding Costume Design to Cait O&#8217;Connor.<\/p>\n<p>Indie opera company darlings <strong>Tapestry Opera<\/strong> won for Outstanding New Musical for <em>M&#8217;dea Undone<\/em> with Marjorie Chan (librettist) and John Harris (composer).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Against the Grain<\/strong>, who are currently in Banff workshopping a new production of Benjamin Britten&#8217;s The Rape of Lucretia, won the Outstanding Performance \u2013 Ensemble category for their innovative production of Handel&#8217;s Messiah.<\/p>\n<p>The musical theatre division was led by <strong>Mirvish<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Kinky Boots<\/em>, which had 10 nominations, and took home Outstanding Production, Outstanding Male Performance for Alan Mingo Jr. and Outstanding Choreography.<\/p>\n<p>The general theatre categories <strong>Tarragon Theatre<\/strong> picked up a total of three: <em>Mustard<\/em> (Outstanding Male Performance: Anand Rajaram and Outstanding New Play: Kat Sandler); and <em>Blind Date<\/em> (Outstanding Female Performance: Rebecca Northan).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Factory Theatre<\/strong> captured two awards for <em>Salt-Water Moon<\/em> (Outstanding Direction: Ravi Jain) and <em>Bombay Black<\/em> (Outstanding Lighting Design: Jennifer Lennon).<\/p>\n<p>Not to be undone, <strong>Canadian Stage<\/strong> also won two for <em>Chimerica<\/em> (Outstanding Scenic Design: Judith Bowden) and <em>Botticelli in the Fire &amp; Sunday in Sodom<\/em> (Outstanding Production: Jordan Tannahill)<\/p>\n<p><strong>VideoCabaret<\/strong> took home awards for <em>The Great War<\/em>: Outstanding Ensemble and Costume Design by Astrid Janson and Melanie McNeill.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Theatre Centre<\/strong>\u2019s <em>We Are Proud to Present<\/em> closed the division with a win for Outstanding Sound Design\/Composition (Debashis Sinha).<\/p>\n<p>In the independent theatre division, it was\u00a0Cliff Cardinal&#8217;s night for his critically praised solo show <em>Huff<\/em>, which won Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Male Performance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Canadian Stage<\/strong>\u2019s remounted production of <em>Betroffenheit<\/em> won big with the dance division&#8217;s Outstanding Production award. <strong>Peggy Baker Dance Projects<\/strong> and <strong>Princess Productions<\/strong> tied with two wins each: Baker&#8217;s <em>Phase Space<\/em> (two Design Awards), and Princess for Outstanding Original Choreography &amp; Outstanding Performance \u2013 Male.<\/p>\n<p><em>Cold Blood<\/em> won for Outstanding Touring Production presented by <strong>Canadian Stage<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For a complete list of winners from the 2016 Dora Awards, see <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"https:\/\/tapa.ca\/blog\/announcement-recipients-for-the-2016-dora-awards-announced-tapa\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>#LUDWIGVAN<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Want more updates on Toronto-centric classical music news and review\u00a0before anyone else finds out?
