Who wouldn’t like to a free ticket to see an opera? The Canadian Opera Company has confirmed it will participate in the Institute for Canadian Citizenship\u2019s (ICC) Cultural Access Pass program. The ICC is a national, non-profit charity that helps accelerate new citizens’ integration into Canadian life through original programs, collaborations and unique volunteer opportunities.<\/p>\n

The ticket program aims to provide one year of complimentary admission to more than 1,200 cultural attractions across the country.<\/p>\n

The first phase of the collaboration will officially launch this spring with the Opera Access for New Canadians program and include free tickets to COC productions of Carmen and Maometto II in April and May 2016. The program is open to any new Canadian citizen within the last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are proud of providing a cultural space in this country where people are free to gather, create art and express opinions\u2013freedoms not granted in many places around the world,\u201d says COC General Director Alexander Neef in a press release statement. \u201cThe Opera Access program is a celebration of that freedom and a way for us at the COC to welcome new Canadians to our community and introduce them to our art form.\u201d<\/p>\n

The initiative will allocate and distribute a maximum of 40 COC opera dress rehearsal tickets per available date. New Canadians will also be invited to watch pre-performance chats and receive an exclusive tour of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.<\/p>\n

The program was first announced on opening night of the COC’s The Marriage of Figaro in February 2016. The COC followed-up by hosting groups of Syrian and Ethiopian refugees at performances of The Marriage of Figaro, facilitated by the ICC, Lifeline Syria and The Ripple Refugee Project.<\/p>\n

According to the ICC, New citizens who have received their Canadian citizenship within the past year can register for a Cultural Access Pass. The pass is valid for one year from the date of obtaining citizenship.
