The Canadian Federal Government, Canadian Heritage Minister M\u00e9lanie Joly today announced the federal government will contribute $17.5 million in support funding for community events and a “national musical celebration” to honour Canada’s 150th birthday<\/a> in 2017.<\/p>\n

The money will be made available as part of the Community Foundations of Canada’s community fund project, which makes microgrants available for organisations to put on events in thousands of communities across the country.<\/p>\n

The fund was the result of a close collaboration between the Government of Canada, the private sector and the non-profit sector, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, who will be getting $7.5 million from the federal government.<\/p>\n

TSO CEO and president Jeff Melanson said in a statement that the “project will create a national musical celebration for Canada’s 150th and will have a lasting impact on music in Canada well beyond 2017.”<\/p>\n

He also hinted that the funds will help create “extraordinary conditions for Canadian composers and innovators to flourish.”<\/p>\n

Whether this means the funds will include new commissions by Canadian composers is anyone’s guess, but it seems likely that we will be hearing more from Canadian composers leading up to the 150th Canada Day celebrations held across the country in 2017.<\/p>\n
