After premiering<\/a> A Little Too Cozy in Banff last summer, Against the Grain Theatre have announced today that they will be bringing their modern-day adaptation of Mozart\u2019s “Cos\u00ec fan tutte” to Toronto this May 12 to 21, 2016.<\/p>\n

But the real kicker is the venue. It will be fully staged in a television studio at the CBC’s downtown headquarters in Toronto on John St.<\/p>\n

The production is the final of three \u201ctransladaptations\u201d developed by AtG over the past five years. The process places original music from Mozart\u2019s operas \u2013 in this case, “Cos\u00ec fan tutte”\u00a0\u2013 and drops it within a contemporary setting using a new English-language libretto by AtG Founder and Artistic Director Joel Ivany.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis production is a benchmark show for AtG,\u201d says Joel Ivany. \u201cIt\u2019s our most ambitious, exciting production to date, and staging it live in such a landmark venue as a CBC studio is definitely a highlight for our young company.\u201d<\/p>\n

In full-on regietheater<\/em>\u00a0style, the opera’s premise surrounds a modern-day wedding reality TV show featuring four young contestants who have found their match…\u00a0or so it seems.<\/p>\n

Spectators will not only act as patrons, but they also play the role as the live studio audience witnessing the final episode of the reality show that asks its contestants: \u201cCan you fall in love with someone you\u2019ve never met?\u201d<\/p>\n

The cast includes soprano Shantelle Przybylo, mezzo-soprano Rihab Chaieb, tenor Aaron Sheppard and baritone Clarence Frazer as the matched contestants. Baritone Cairan Ryan returns as the loud-suited reality show host, Donald L. Fonzo. Soprano Caitlin Wood returns as his and the contestants’ handler Despina.<\/p>\n
