At home on both period and modern instruments, she has performed with\u00a0Tafelmusik, Ensemble Caprice, Studio de musique ancienne, Arion, Theatre of Early Music, Les Violon du Roy. Her quartet Pallade Musica won the grand prize at the 2012 Early Music America Baroque Performance Competition and second prize at the 2014 International Van Wassenaer Competition in Utrecht. Solo recording projects include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/album\/dialoghi\/id441825478\">Dialoghi<\/a>\u00a0(2008) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/ca\/album\/la-voce-del-violoncello\/id667274741\">La voce del violoncello<\/a>\u00a0(2013), and <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/album\/berlin-cello-sonatas-by-abel\/id967749265\">Berlin Sonatas<\/a>\u00a0(2015) which was recently\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.musicaltoronto.org\/2016\/02\/02\/the-scoop-2016-classical-music-juno-award-nominees-announced\/\">nominated<\/a> for a Juno Award for album of the year. Elinor trained at McGill, Mannes, and Juilliard.<\/p>\n<h3>Name your favourite concert hall\/venue anywhere<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The one where the audience is listening attentively with an open heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Your role models?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Marc Vanscheeuwijck, Steven Stucky, my mom.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Your favourite sound?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The resonant open string of a cello, of course!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Your least favourite sound?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">A loud TV news station blasting in the next room or in a taxi.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">First thing that comes to your mind when you think about Toronto<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Supportive friends and colleagues.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">If you could board a plane this afternoon, where would it be taking you?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Rome! And then on to some place in Italy that I\u2019ve never been, like Sicily or Lecce or Matera. I love Italian people (ciao amici!!), food (pasta!!!), language (ciao ciao ciao ciao!), history, architecture, landscapes\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">The three books that you read that made an impact on you in your formative years?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2014 The Wheel on the School by Meindert DeJong (taught me that young people can have a vision for change and together make an impact on nature and on their community),\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2014 D\u2019Aulaire\u2019s Book of Greek Myths (OBSESSED with Greek myths, plus the illustrations were spectacular),<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>\u2014 <\/b>The Stories of Eva Luna by Isabelle Allende (every one a gem)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Whose musical style do you covet?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">I have a big music-crush on the violinist\/conductor Reinhard Goebel. I like how nerdy he is and how he shows us to keep exploring a wide variety of works\/styles.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">The clich\u00e9 that you overuse?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cLet\u2019s try, it\u2019s ok, we can always erase it!\u201d My quartet colleagues will recognize this one!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">The different career path that you could have gone on?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">I would have liked to be an archaeologist. As a kid, I loved Greek myths and was very inspired by the story of archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann. Imagine discovering an ancient Greek gold diadem by digging (carefully!) in the ground! I think playing Early Music can have a little of that thrill. We poke around (sometimes actually in libraries and archives) for unknown music, some of which is absolutely stunning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Your three favourite films?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Caro Diario, Scarlet Pimpernel,\u00a0anything with Marcello Mastroianni\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">The character flaw in others that you can\u2019t abide?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Lack of enthusiasm.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">What was the luckiest moment in your life?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Being born next to my twin sister, Maddy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">The biggest mistake you\u2019ve ever made?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Speaking out of anger\/fear.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">What is the worst thing about your work?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Scheduling. So many times a season you feel the crushing sadness of having to say no to a wonderful concert opportunity because something else is already booked. To survive as a freelancer, one needs MANY concerts, but then when they collide in the same week and can feel so frustrating.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">The talent that you wish you possessed?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">To hit a hard and fast tennis serve.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">What musical instrument do you secretly long to play?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">I really want to play cornetto!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">If you had a motto, what would it be?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">&#8220;Just do it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Your favourite word?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">I don\u2019t have one, but I\u2019ll tell you my mom\u2019s: &#8220;incandescent.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">The strangest road you\u2019ve ever travelled?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">The path to being a professional cellist!! What a crazy ride!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">The first album that made you love music?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Tchaikovsky\u2019s Nutcracker Suite on LP in my parents\u2019 living room. I used to lie on the floor listening, and my imagination would take over. Also Sequentia\u2019s \u201cCanticles of Ecstasy,\u201d their first Hildegard von Bingen album, showed me how music could transcend time and place.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">Three pieces, songs, or arias that you could listen to on repeat for an hour?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2014 Steven Isserlis\/Olli Mustonen playing Janacek\u2019s Fairy Tales,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2014 Steven Stucky\u2019s Radical Light<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2014 Isaiah Ceccarelli\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Toute clart\u00e9 m&#8217;est obscure (III)<span class=\"s2\">&#8221; with clarinetist Lori Freedman improvising at the end (I have had it on repeat on Soundcloud for months), \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">\u2014 So many pieces by Bach that I couldn\u2019t narrow it down.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">The first three things that you do every morning?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">1) Make a great cappuccino for myself and any visiting guests,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">2) Look around me and feel grateful,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">3) Check emails and get right to work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\">The best way to die?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\">Very very old with a weakened but still vital mind and body, dying in sleep without disease, still having been engaged with family, friends, music, community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>#LUDWIGVAN<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Want more updates on Toronto-centric classical music news and review\u00a0before anyone else finds out?
