Tafelmusik are known for high standards. To further their vision for an international centre of musical excellence, they have announced a new vocal competition that will see three prize-winning singers join the Tafelmusik choir and orchestra as soloists for performances in the spring of 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs an established ensemble with a large and enthusiastic audience, Tafelmusik is in an excellent position to nurture and boost the careers of the next generation of historically-informed vocal soloists,\u201d Chief Artistic Advisor Jeanne Lamon commented in the press release. \u201cI am very happy that the Tafelmusik Vocal Competition will join our existing artist training programmes to identify rising stars, and bring them to our stage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The contest will be open to altos (mezzo-sopranos, countertenors, contraltos), tenors, and baritones\/basses under the age 35. (Note: Sopranos are not included in the competition as\u00a0German soprano Dorothee Mields (no stranger to Toronto audiences) will be the featured soloist\u00a0and will be mentoring the winners in a series of masterclasses.)<\/span><\/p>\n

The competition will be in two rounds, and start with Jeanne Lamon and Ivars Taurins, Director of the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir judging recorded submissions from the singers, due by 15 October 2015. <\/span><\/p>\n

Only nine finalists will be selected to sing in the final round held at Toronto\u2019s Trinity-St. Paul\u2019s Centre, Jeanne Lamon Hall on 16 January 2016. Canadian singers and teachers, Mary Morrison and Catherine Robbin will join Jeanne Lamon, Ivars Taurins as the jury. Performers will be asked to sing an assigned solo from Zelenka\u2019s Missa omnium\u00a0<\/span>sanctorum<\/em>, an aria from a Bach cantata or passionto, and a Handel opera or oratorio aria.\u00a0The final round of the competition will be open to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n
