principal viola Teng Li and cellist Winona Zelenka &#8212; and ends with the opening night of Jacques Offenbach&#8217;s <em>Tales of Hoffmann<\/em>, under COC music director Johannes Debus.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>On the programme are two four-movement works that will take up nearly the full hour of the free lunchtime concert: an early <em>String Trio<\/em> by Ludwig van Beethoven and <em>Cloud Trio<\/em> by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an all-star taste of the Beethoven <em>Trio<\/em>, featuring Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zuckerman and Lynn Harrell at New York&#8217;s 92nd Street Y in 1990:<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; Radvanovsky, one of the finest Verdi sopranos of our time, sings &#8220;Merc\u00e8, dilette amiche&#8221; from <em>I vespri siciliani<\/em> as well as the &#8220;Letter Scene&#8221; from Tchaikovsky&#8217;s <em>Eugene Onegin<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The big symphonic piece of the evening is Tchaikovsky&#8217;s &#8220;Path\u00e9tique&#8221; (<em>No. 6<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>For full programme details, and tickets, click <a href=\"http:\/\/tso.ca\/Concerts-And-Tickets\/Events\/2011-2012-Season\/Tchaikovsky-Verdi.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is &#8220;O patria mia,&#8221; from Radvanovsky&#8217;s great turn as Aida at the Canadian Opera Company at the start of last season:<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LrKfMzgm7oU?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>This is not on the programme, but makes for interesting listening.<\/p>\n<p>Noseda has been championing the work of Italian composer Alfredo Casella (1883-1947), and last year released <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chandos.net\/details06.asp?CNumber=CHAN%2010605\" target=\"_blank\">a riveting recording<\/a> of the <em>Symphony No. 2<\/em> with the BBC Philharmonic on the Chandos label. Casella was educated in Paris and, unlike his Italian contemporaries, concentrated on instrumental rather than operatic music. You can&#8217;t live with them, you can&#8217;t legally have them all sent to an island in the middle of the ocean. The Baroque era saw many families of composers and musicians who tolerated each other &#8211; or didn&#8217;t. Jed Wentz and Olivier Fortin come for an\u00a0I Furiosi dysfunctional family reunion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wentz, who teaches at the Amsterdam Conservatory, is a fantastic period flautist, and a very capable conductor.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are $10 or $29, and are only available at the door.
