2015 Glenn Gould Prize winner, Philip Glass<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Glenn Gould Foundation<\/a> has\u00a0announced<\/a> that the eleventh recipient of the\u00a0Glenn Gould Prize is American composer and pianist Philip Glass.<\/p>\n

Announced\u00a0today at a ceremony held today at Koerner Hall, the major award is offered biennially to “an individual for a unique lifetime contribution that has enriched the human condition through the arts.\u201d The prize promotes the \u201cvital connection between artistic excellence and the transformation of lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Philip Glass responded by stating he was happy to receive the honour named after the renowned Canadian pianist. He added, “It is for me a special honor as I am one of the many musicians who have been inspired by him\u201d [\u2026] \u201cGlenn\u00a0Gould’s name is associated with a lifetime of excellence in music interpretation and\u00a0performance.”<\/p>\n

Brian Levine, Executive Director of The Glenn Gould Foundation stated, “Our jury has made a brilliant choice in selecting\u00a0Philip Glass [\u2026] In his work and life, he reveals himself to be a man of deep spirituality and conscience as reflected in the themes of his operatic creations and film scores. We are honoured to present the Prize to an artist of such originality, conviction and vision.”<\/p>\n

Mr. Glass will receive a cash prize of\u00a0$100,000 and a\u00a0sculpture by\u00a0Canadian artist\u00a0Ruth\u00a0Abernethy.<\/p>\n

Jurors included soprano Deborah Voigt, actors Petula\u00a0Clark and Sarah\u00a0Polley, novelist Michael\u00a0Ondaatje, former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson \u00a0and Grammy Award nominee Wu Man.<\/p>\n

As per tradition, Mr. Glass will be given the task of choosing an\u00a0artist to receive The City of Toronto Glenn Gould Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Prize, which totals\u00a0$15,000. Both Mr. Glass and his chosen prot\u00e9g\u00e9 will receive their awards at a gala event later this year.<\/p>\n

Previous winners include: Robert\u00a0Lepage<\/strong> (2013), Leonard Cohen<\/strong> (2011), Dr.\u00a0Jos\u00e9 Antonio Abreu<\/strong> (2008), Sir\u00a0Andr\u00e9\u00a0Previn<\/strong> (2005), Pierre Boulez<\/strong> (2002), Yo-Yo Ma<\/strong> (1999), Toru Takemitsu<\/strong> (1996), Oscar Peterson<\/strong> (1993), Lord Yehudi Menuhin<\/strong> (1990) and R. Murray Schafer<\/strong> (1987).<\/p>\n
