Massey Hall Launches Phase 1 of Seven-Year Revitalization Project on February 23. Event includes Cabinet Ministers, Private Sector and Artist Performance.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Today the Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall announced the launch of Phase 1 of its seven-year Massey Hall Revitalisation<\/i> project. The rebirth\u00a0of one of Canada’s\u00a0flagship arts venues will be completed in two phases, and will cost a total of $135M.<\/p>\n

The event acknowledged individual donors who, led by the Corporation\u2019s Board of Governors and past Chairs, have contributed more than $1M in funding towards Phase 1.<\/p>\n

Both RBC and TD Bank Group announced funding commitments of $1M in support of the Massey Hall Revitalization Project, with RBC directing $250,000 towards the Corporation\u2019s respected initiatives in artist development.<\/p>\n

The federal and provincial government will invest $8 million each to cover the remaining costs of the first revitalisation\u00a0phase of the Massey Hall.<\/p>\n

Commitments in funding support from both American Express Foundation and Edwards Charitable Foundation were also announced.<\/p>\n

\u201cMassey Hall has long been a room that musicians \u2013 both Canadian and international \u2013 aspire to play, said Chris Lorway, Director of Programming and Marketing, CMH RTH. \u201cWhat is most exciting about this project is the prospect of continuing this legacy of iconic performances that have defined the space over the last century. With our ongoing commitment to artist development, we hope to ensure that these Massey moments continue well into the future.”<\/p>\n

The $32M Phase 1 plan unfolds with the demolition of the Albert Building which sits adjacent to the south side of Massey Hall. It includes the building of a two-story basement foundation that will accommodate a modernized back stage area and artist space, a new loading dock, as well as technical and production facilities.<\/p>\n

Phase 2 construction will begin in 2019, and will focus on the exterior and interior restoration of Massey Hall.<\/p>\n

\u201cMassey Hall is an iconic building at the very heart of our city,\u201d says Mayor John Tory. \u201cLike many Torontonians, I have spent countless evenings enjoying concerts there with friends and family. I’m thrilled that all three governments, along with the private sector, have come on board to revitalize this historic landmark that means so much to our city and, in particular, to Toronto music lovers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speakers included Joe Oliver<\/strong>, Federal Minister of Finance and Minister Responsible for the GTA\u2028\u00a0Gary Goodyear<\/strong>, Minister of State, Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario\u2028\u00a0Michael Coteau<\/strong>, MPP, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport\u2028\u00a0Mayor John Tory<\/strong>, City of Toronto\u2028\u00a0Kim Mason<\/strong>, Regional President, Greater Toronto Region, RBC.<\/p>\n

Massey Hall will remain open\u00a0during the first phase of the project, but will be closed for a period of 18 to 24 months during the second renovation phase.<\/p>\n
