Itzhak Perlman is one of the last of the Violin Rat Pack \u2014 an exclusive club with members including Jascha Heifetz, Yehudi Menuhin, David Oistrakh and Isaac Stern. It is a club in decline, making virtuosi like Perlman all the more valuable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Perhaps this was why it felt so surreal to watch Perlman, whom I\u2019ve seen countless times on television, perform at Roy Thomson Hall on Monday night.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ever since my days as a conservatory student, I\u2019ve followed his recordings \u2014 from his devil in the detail Paganini Violin Concerto No. 1<\/i>, to Sarasate\u2019s fiendish Carmen Fantasy<\/i>. Now I follow him on Facebook<\/a>, where he posts daily aphorisms, and his profile photo shows his Guarneri del Gesu tucked assuredly under his chin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
