Of course this is not to say we are the provocateurs of taste, simply seek to provide a good weekly summary. Tuesday 7<\/strong><\/p>\n

Canadian Opera Company<\/span>\u00a0Vocal Series with Colin Ainsworth<\/span> and Stephen Ralls<\/span> at the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. Noon. Free!<\/p>\n

We’ve\u00a0always been a big fan of the COC\u2019s free noon-hour series concerts. They are a great opportunity to relax during a lunch hour break, and an\u00a0opportunity to take in some culture while you’re at it. This afternoon\u00a0features a performance of three song cycles by Canadian composer Derek Holman, with tenor Colin Ainsworth and pianist Stephen Ralls. Do check it out. Details here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Wednesday 8<\/strong><\/p>\n

Toronto Symphony Orchestra<\/span>\u00a0with\u00a0violinist Karen Gomyo<\/span> & guest conductor Jakub Hrusa<\/span> at Roy Thomson Hall, 6:30 pm. $39-82<\/p>\n

Montreal born Karen Gomyo, is in town this week to perform the demanding Sibelius\u2019s Violin Concerto, and the popular Dvo\u0159\u00e1k\u2019s New World Symphony<\/em>. Gomyo is an incredibly agile violinist, and along with Jakub Hrusa, this should be a great show. Details here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Show repeats on October 9 and 11, with the addition of Morawetz:\u00a0Carnival Overture\u00a0(Oct 9 only).<\/p>\n

Group of 27<\/span> & Ensemble Made In Canada<\/span> at Heliconian Hall. 7:30 pm. PWYC.<\/p>\n

Toronto\u2019s “all-star classical band” opens their season with a show featuring piano quintet EMIC. Works include Dvo\u0159\u00e1k Piano in E-flat Op.87; Hedges: Snikt, bub!<\/em>. Complimentary food provided by Cheese Magic and Wanda\u2019s Pie in the Sky. Info here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Thursday 9<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cecilia String Quartet<\/span> &\u00a0Gryphon Trio<\/span> at Walter Hall, Edward Johnson Building. 12:10 pm. Free!<\/p>\n

Another\u00a0free noon-hour concert to catch\u00a0this week is the Cecilia String Quartet &\u00a0Gryphon Trio performing Haydn\u2019s String Quartet Op.20 No.4, as well as selections from his piano trios. The program also includes a recent piece by Quebec-based composer, Michael Oesterle. Can\u2019t go wrong here. Details<\/a>.<\/p>\n

St. Petersburg Quartet<\/span> at Jane Mallett Theatre. 8:00 pm.$10-55<\/p>\n

Music Toronto presents the great St. Petersburg Quartet, performing the Toronto premiere of Zurab Nadarejshvili\u2019s Quartet No.1, alongside Shostakovich\u2019s Quartet No.8, and Tchaikovsky\u2019s Quartet No.1. It has been 20 years since the award-winning St. Petersburg Quartet have visited Toronto, so don\u2019t miss it. Details here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Tafelmusik<\/span> with Davide Monti<\/span> and Alessandro Bressanello<\/span> at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre, Jeanne Lamon Hall. 8:00 pm. $15-89<\/p>\n

For your period orchestra fix, come see Tafelmusik\u2019s The Canals of Venice<\/em>. Works include Albinoni, Marcello, and Vivaldi, with narration by the Italian commedia dell’arte actor Alessandro Bressanello. Details here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Friday 10<\/strong><\/p>\n

Opera by Request<\/span>, at the College Street United Church. 7:30 pm. $20<\/p>\n

Opera By Request hosts\u00a0another opera instalment with Ambroise Thomas\u2019s grand opera Hamlet<\/em> (1868). Performers include Simon Chaussee and Norman Brown (baritones), Gerda Findeisen (soprano), Ioanna Touliatu (mezzo-soprano), and\u00a0 Danny LeClerc (tenor). (very little) Details here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Saturday 11<\/strong><\/p>\n

Canadian Opera Company<\/span>, Puccini\u2019s\u00a0Madama Butterfly at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. 4:30pm. $12-339<\/p>\n

After a very successful season opening Falstaff –<\/em>which continues to run until November 1st, the COC presents\u00a0one of the best-loved operas of all time: Madama Butterfly<\/em>. It first premiered in Toronto in 1990 and was then revived in 1994, 1998, 2003 and 2009. It is produced by Brian Macdonald, with design by Susan Benson, and lighting by Michael Whitfield.
