Noon. Free!<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve\u00a0always been a big fan of the COC\u2019s free noon-hour series concerts. They are a great opportunity to relax during a lunch hour break, and an\u00a0opportunity to take in some culture while you&#8217;re at it. This afternoon\u00a0features a performance of three song cycles by Canadian composer Derek Holman, with tenor Colin Ainsworth and pianist Stephen Ralls. Do check it out. Details <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coc.ca\/performancesandtickets\/FreeConcertSeries\/October.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wednesday 8<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Toronto Symphony Orchestra<\/span>\u00a0with\u00a0violinist <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Karen Gomyo<\/span> &amp; guest conductor <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Jakub Hrusa<\/span> at Roy Thomson Hall, 6:30 pm. $39-82<\/p>\n<p>Montreal born Karen Gomyo, is in town this week to perform the demanding Sibelius\u2019s Violin Concerto, and the popular Dvo\u0159\u00e1k\u2019s <em>New World Symphony<\/em>. Gomyo is an incredibly agile violinist, and along with Jakub Hrusa, this should be a great show. PWYC.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto\u2019s &#8220;all-star classical band&#8221; opens their season with a show featuring piano quintet EMIC. Free!<\/p>\n<p>Another\u00a0free noon-hour concert to catch\u00a0this week is the Cecilia String Quartet &amp;\u00a0Gryphon Trio performing Haydn\u2019s String Quartet Op.20 No.4, as well as selections from his piano trios. The program also includes a recent piece by Quebec-based composer, Michael Oesterle. It has been 20 years since the award-winning St. Petersburg Quartet have visited Toronto, so don\u2019t miss it. Performers include Simon Chaussee and Norman Brown (baritones), Gerda Findeisen (soprano), Ioanna Touliatu (mezzo-soprano), and\u00a0 Danny LeClerc (tenor). (very little) Details <a href=\"http:\/\/operabyrequest.ca\/wordpress\/?p=244\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saturday 11<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Canadian Opera Company<\/span>, Puccini\u2019s\u00a0Madama Butterfly at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. 4:30pm. $12-339<\/p>\n<p>After a very successful season opening <em>Falstaff &#8211;<\/em>which continues to run until November 1st, the COC presents\u00a0one of the best-loved operas of all time: <em>Madama Butterfly<\/em>. It first premiered in Toronto in 1990 and was then revived in 1994, 1998, 2003 and 2009. It is produced by Brian Macdonald, with design by Susan Benson, and lighting by Michael Whitfield. Looks very promising.
