Our weekly Critic\u2019s Picks is a fully curated list of\u00a0some of the best concerts going on now through the end of the week. Of course this is not to say we are the provocateurs of taste, but simply strive to provide a good weekly summary. Tuesday 16<\/b><\/p>\n

St. Lawrence String Quartet<\/span>\u00a0at University of Toronto\u2019s Walter Hall, 7 pm. $10-40<\/p>\n

As new music students get used to the idea of 4 + hours of ear-training and endless four-part harmony exercises, the University of Toronto\u2019s Faculty of Music spins up a new season (and academic year) with the St. Lawrence String Quartet. They\u00a0will be performing a mix of old and semi-new works with Golijov\u2019s\u00a0Kohelet<\/i>, Haydn\u2019s String Quartet Op.20 No.1, and Verdi\u2019s String Quartet. Array Ensemble<\/span>\u00a0at the Gladstone Hotel, 8 pm. Free<\/p>\n

Arraymusic presents\u00a0miniatures<\/i>, written by Toronto composer Nic Gotham in collaboration with\u00a0local author Martha Baillie for her new book,\u00a0The Search For Heinrich Schl\u00f6gel<\/i>. The two Toronto-based artists have been busy at the Array Space this past summer, recording music for a gallery installation called the\u00a0Schl\u00f6gel Archive<\/i>. According to the website, since January 2012, Baillie has been transcribing the manuscript onto hundreds of postcards and mailing these to friends. They record each postcard and uploaded them all to the projects archival\u00a0website<\/a>.\u00a0For more details click\u00a0here<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Wednesday 17<\/b><\/p>\n

Beerology: Hopera<\/span>\u00a0at Habits Gastropub 7 pm. $38.80<\/p>\n

Craft beer and opera: Hopera. Over two days, opera singers will perform a selection of eight operatic arias, duos and trios, paired with a local craft beer and presented with details on the musical selection and the beer style as well as why they were chosen. The website says it will provide meaningful insight into the worlds of local craft beer and opera. If the opera fails, at least come for the beer. Show repeats Thursday, September 18. Thursday 18<\/b><\/p>\n

Tafelmusik<\/span>\u00a0at Koerner Hall, 8 pm. $25-107<\/p>\n

Tafelmusik returns to celebrate the season\u2019s opening concert, which is bittersweet as\u00a0this is the first season without\u00a0Jeanne Lamon, who stepped down as Music Director early last\u00a0summer. The concert features Handel\u2019s\u00a0Music for the Royal Fireworks,\u00a0<\/i>and Vivaldi\u2019s\u00a0Il grosso mogul<\/i>\u00a0as well as works by Corelli, Heinichen,\u00a0and Telemann. The period orchestra welcomes violinist and guest director Rodolfo Richter. The concert repeats through the 21st<\/span>, with a 3:30 pm matin\u00e9e. Not to be missed. Toronto Symphony Orchestra<\/span>\u00a0at Roy Thomson Hall, 7 pm. $38.75-169<\/p>\n

It\u2019s opening night with the TSO and Peter Oundjian, who are likely feeling refreshed\u00a0after a long vacation\/tour in Europe this summer. Joshua Bell will be in town to commemorate the season, opening with a\u00a0performance of Berlioz\u2019s Roman Carnival Overture<\/em>,\u00a0Lalo\u2019s Symphonie Espagnole<\/em>, and the masterfully orchestrated Capriccio Espagnol<\/em> by Rimsky-Korsakov. Ladom Ensemble<\/span>\u00a0at the Canadian Music Centre, 7:30 pm. $20<\/p>\n

The Canadian Music Centre presents Toronto\u2019s Ladom Ensemble, which packs a real punch! \u00a0Established by music students at the University of Toronto, they have become Toronto’s premiere ensemble specializing in Persian and Balkan music. The group features:\u00a0 Marie-Cristine Pelchat St-Jacques (cello), Michael Bridge (accordion), Adam Campbell (percussion), and Pouya Hamidi (piano). Event info\u00a0here<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Friday 19<\/b><\/p>\n

Organix Concerts<\/span>\u00a0at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 7:30 pm. $0-30<\/p>\n

The Organix Organ Festival has been going strong since April and continues this month with a performance by organist, Rhonda Sider Edgington. She will play\u00a0a varied program of works from Germany, North America, England and France. For organ lovers, this is the ticket this week. More details\u00a0here<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Saturday 20<\/b><\/p>\n

Toy Piano Composers<\/span>\u00a0at the Music Gallery, 8 pm. $15-20<\/p>\n

For those interested in catching-up with some of Toronto\u2019s brightest lights, check out the\u00a0Piano Composers\u2019\u00a0Pandora\u2019s Box,\u00a0<\/i>featuring music by locals\u00a0Brophy, Doell, Pearce and Ryan. US-based composer and instrument inventor Anthony Marasco will also be on hand. TPC events are always worthwhile and typically focus on premieres, so come out and support this amazing group. More details\u00a0here<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Toronto Symphony Orchestra<\/span>\u00a0at Roy Thomson Hall, 8 pm. $33-145<\/p>\n

Arabian Nights – part of TSO’s\u00a0MasterWorks Series, features\u00a0<\/i>concertmaster\u00a0Jonathan Crow\u00a0performing Ravel\u2019s Bol\u00e9ro<\/i>, along with Stravinsky\u2019s Suite from The Firebird<\/i>, and Rimsky-Korsakov\u2019s Sheherazade<\/i> (which was recorded\u00a0on the TSO\u2019s recent CD release last month); Peter Oundjian conducting. Tribute to Our\u00a0(R.) Murray Schafer<\/span>\u00a0at the The Westben Barn, 2 pm. $5-50<\/p>\n

For those who don\u2019t mind a trip\u00a0to Campbellford, Ontario<\/a>,\u00a0the Westben Arts festival Theatre will present a very special tribute to composer R. Murray Schafer; a\u00a0recent recipient of the\u00a0companion of the Order of Canada last week. \u00a0The concert features a\u00a0star-studded list of who’s who, including: Ben Heppner (host), Donna Bennett (soprano), Eleanor James (mezzo), Gryphon Piano Trio, Judy Loman (harp), Molinari String Quartet, The Westben Festival Chorus and Brian Finley (piano).
