Our weekly Critic\u2019s Picks is a fully curated list of\u00a0some of the best concerts going on now through the end of the week. Of course this is not to say we are the provocateurs of taste, but simply strive to provide a good weekly summary. They\u00a0will be performing a mix of old and semi-new works with Golijov\u2019s\u00a0<i>Kohelet<\/i>, Haydn\u2019s String Quartet Op.20 No.1, and Verdi\u2019s String Quartet. More details\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.music.utoronto.ca\/events\/calendar\/slsq140916.htm\"><span class=\"s1\">here<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Array Ensemble<\/span>\u00a0at the Gladstone Hotel, 8 pm. Free<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Arraymusic presents\u00a0<i>miniatures<\/i>, written by Toronto composer Nic Gotham in collaboration with\u00a0local author Martha Baillie for her new book,\u00a0<i>The Search For Heinrich Schl\u00f6gel<\/i>. The two Toronto-based artists have been busy at the Array Space this past summer, recording music for a gallery installation called the\u00a0<i>Schl\u00f6gel Archive<\/i>. According to the website, since January 2012, Baillie has been transcribing the manuscript onto hundreds of postcards and mailing these to friends. They record each postcard and uploaded them all to the projects archival\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/schlogel.ca\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>.\u00a0For more details click\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arraymusic.com\/martha-baillie-book-launch-nic-gotham-miniatures\/\"><span class=\"s1\">here<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Wednesday 17<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s2\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Beerology: Hopera<\/span>\u00a0at Habits Gastropub 7 pm. $38.80<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Craft beer and opera: Hopera. Over two days, opera singers will perform a selection of eight operatic arias, duos and trios, paired with a local craft beer and presented with details on the musical selection and the beer style as well as why they were chosen. The website says it will provide meaningful insight into the worlds of local craft beer and opera. If the opera fails, at least come for the beer. Show repeats Thursday, September 18. The concert features Handel\u2019s\u00a0<i>Music for the Royal Fireworks,\u00a0<\/i>and Vivaldi\u2019s\u00a0<i>Il grosso mogul<\/i>\u00a0as well as works by Corelli, Heinichen,\u00a0and Telemann. The period orchestra welcomes violinist and guest director Rodolfo Richter. The concert repeats through the 21<span class=\"s3\">st<\/span>, with a 3:30 pm matin\u00e9e. Not to be missed. Joshua Bell will be in town to commemorate the season, opening with a\u00a0performance of Berlioz\u2019s <em>Roman Carnival Overture<\/em>,\u00a0Lalo\u2019s <em>Symphonie Espagnole<\/em>, and the masterfully orchestrated <em>Capriccio Espagnol<\/em> by Rimsky-Korsakov. The group features:\u00a0 Marie-Cristine Pelchat St-Jacques (cello), Michael Bridge (accordion), Adam Campbell (percussion), and Pouya Hamidi (piano). She will play\u00a0a varied program of works from Germany, North America, England and France. For organ lovers, this is the ticket this week. US-based composer and instrument inventor Anthony Marasco will also be on hand. TPC events are always worthwhile and typically focus on premieres, so come out and support this amazing group. Murray Schafer<\/span>\u00a0at the The Westben Barn, 2 pm. $5-50<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For those who don\u2019t mind a trip\u00a0to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.ca\/maps\/search\/Westben+Arts+Festival+Theatre,+County+Road+2,+Hastings,+ON\/@44.3077318,-77.8013259,15z\" target=\"_blank\">Campbellford, Ontario<\/a>,\u00a0the Westben Arts festival Theatre will present a very special tribute to composer R. Murray Schafer; a\u00a0recent recipient of the\u00a0companion of the Order of Canada last week. \u00a0The concert features a\u00a0star-studded list of who&#8217;s who, including: Ben Heppner (host), Donna Bennett (soprano), Eleanor James (mezzo), Gryphon Piano Trio, Judy Loman (harp), Molinari String Quartet, The Westben Festival Chorus and Brian Finley (piano).
