Rushing from one chore to another takes its toll, and keeping up with Toronto’s classical music community is no easy task! And with 24/7 connectivity of Facebook, Twitter, and emails, I decided a few years ago to make a tradition of just checking out for a week or so a few times a year. This means no internet, radio, or TV, and just regular old-fashioned living. Remember that?

My family and I choose a new place to travel every year with the goal of being anonymous for a while and reconnecting with each other. Some quiet time to read, some concerts, and time to spark a feeling of wonder into our hearts.

There is also something about traveling that brings people together. Travelers always seem much more open to spontaneous conversations and blossoming friendships. It is an absolutely essential and sacred time.

But after a wonderfully restful and music-filled summer vacation in sunny California, Musical Toronto is back from our hiatus.

Margaritas aside, we are looking forward to keeping you up-to-date with the busy summer music festival season currently kicking-off. We will also be doing as many weekly reviews, interviews, features, and news events we can muster.

We will also be rolling out some pretty big changes to Musical Toronto over the next few months. We are not ready to announce any details just yet, but it is safe to say we will be able to provide a much better service to Toronto’s world-class classical music community. We are very excited about these changes and can’t wait to unveil them as soon as we can.

I’d also like to take this time to personally thank you, our readers for your continued support. With the transition following John Terauds’ departure, the site went through a short period of flux, but we are happy to report our readership have continued to grow, ensuring a healthy future ahead.

And while newspapers continue to feel that classical music and opera coverage is no longer worthwhile, we beg to differ, and look forward to continuing to fill the gap by covering Toronto’s exciting musical community.

This summer, dear readers, take some time and get out to discover some of the many summer classical music festivals, including the Toronto Summer Music Festival (Toronto: July 22 – August 12), The Stratford Summer Music Festival (Stratford: July 14th – August 12) and Festival of the Sound (Parry Sound: July 18th- August 10th). To help keep you up-to-date, we will be doing a weekly summer festival critic’s picks of events in and around Ontario every Monday, so stay tuned for those.

Until then, I wish everyone a summer filled with wonderful music, and most importantly each other!

Yours truly,
Michael Vincent

Time for reflection is probably one of the most neglected aspects of our busy contemporary lives.
