In fact, it\u2019s hard to think of any idea that doesn\u2019t have a parallel in musical discourse somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>The writing about music, especially in music criticism, is so often full of idioms and clich\u00e9s, that we sometimes forget they are there at all. Salvador Dal\u00ed said it best: \u201cThe first man to compare the cheeks of a young woman to a rose was obviously a poet; the first to repeat it was possibly an idiot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Last week in an article by <a href=\"http:\/\/the-toast.net\/2014\/05\/14\/talked-architects-like-talk-writers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mallory Ortberg<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/the-toast.net\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Toast<\/em><\/a>, she conducted a clever experiment about what would happen if we talked about architecture like we talk about writing. We could have easily substituted music clich\u00e9s for writing ones, and the result is <em>\u00e0 propos<\/em>, if not a clever exercise of comparisons:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, I could never do what you do \u2014 you know, get up in the morning and go to my job and do my job there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes I feel like I have a building in me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s your favorite building to re-look at?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019d like to talk about the parts of the building I didn\u2019t build.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis particular building really surprised me. I mean, I designed it, and I approved it, and I oversaw the construction of it, but it still really\u00a0<i>surprised\u00a0<\/i>me. My buildings are always surprising me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Will you sign my house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho would you cast in a film adaptation of your building?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDraft drunk.
