{"id":17684,"date":"2014-03-12T09:37:22","date_gmt":"2014-03-12T14:37:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/?p=17684"},"modified":"2014-03-12T10:45:18","modified_gmt":"2014-03-12T15:45:18","slug":"what-say-ye-faux-beethoven","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2014\/03\/12\/what-say-ye-faux-beethoven\/","title":{"rendered":"What say ye, faux Beethoven?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/03\/628x471.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-17685\" alt=\"628x471\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/03\/628x471.jpg\" width=\"628\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/03\/628x471.jpg 628w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2014\/03\/628x471-300x212.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Japan Times has recently\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2014\/03\/07\/national\/deaf-composer-samuragochi-says-hes-sorry-for-deceiving\/#.UyBc1UJdVTE\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>\u00a0that disgraced Japanese composer, Mamoru Samuragochi has made his first official appearance since it was revealed that he had hired another composer to secretly write his works for him, and that we wasn\u2019t actually deaf.<\/p>\n<p>Appearing almost unrecognizable without his characteristic dark sunglasses and long black hair, Mr. Samuragochi officially acknowledged that he had secretly collaborated with Takashi Niigaki, a part-time lecturer at the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, on the composition of nearly all of his works over the past 18 years, including his popular first symphony and Sonatina for Violin.<\/p>\n<p>During the Tokyo press conference, Samuragochi apologized repeatedly, and confessed that he \u201cwill speak the truth,\u201d and that this announcement will mark his last public appearance.<\/p>\n<p>Japan Times also reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Samuragochi also slammed Niigaki\u2019s claim that he never felt Samuragochi was deaf, saying Niigaki\u2019s allegations about his hearing are \u201call lies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he and Niigaki communicated by writing at first, but then switched to lip reading. Reading Niigaki\u2019s lips got easier as he became used to the way Niigaki speaks, Samuragochi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will sue Niigaki for defamation,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Proving that there is no such thing as bad publicity, his record label announced that the sales of his music have skyrocketed since the story broke.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Samuragochi&#8217;s fiction began to unravel when a reporter from the Japanese magazine Aera, came to Samuragochi&#8217;s house to interview him. During the interview the doorbell rang, and Samuragochi\u00a0stood up to answer the door.<\/p>\n<p>The second inkling came when composer Takeo Noguchi noticed that Samuragochi&#8217;s famous first \u201cHiroshima\u201d symphony included parts adapted from composers like\u00a0Bach, Mozart and Mahler.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s a man who said he goes deep inside himself to pull out what he calls \u2018authentic music,\u2019 but then you hear all these references to the greats \u2013 it just didn\u2019t match up,\u201d Mr. Noguchi said.<\/p>\n<p>Noguchi gave voice to his suspicions in an article published in Shincho 45 &#8211;\u00a0\u201cIs the \u2018Deaf Genius Composer\u2019 Mamoru Samuragochi Really Real?\u201d Once published, Takashi Niigaki, saw the article, and decided to break his silence by going on record admitting that he was the one who actually wrote most of Samuragochi\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>Samuragochi, said over the past three years his hearing has partly returned, and denied that he ever alluded that he was as deaf. Anne Midgette notes\u00a0in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/style\/wp\/2014\/02\/07\/samuragochis-scurrilous-symphony-between-fraud-and-collaboration\/\" target=\"_blank\">article <\/a>published in the Washington Post, that ghostwriting has been a fairly common practice in other disciplines such as visual arts. Jeff Koons and Ai Weiwei, both regularly farm out teams of people to materialize their ideas. Also, Paul McCartney hired composer Carl Davis to formulate and orchestrate his\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.paulmccartney.com\/albums\/10552-liverpool-oratorio\" target=\"_blank\">Liverpool Oratorio<\/a>.
