An old documentary film about Arthur Rubinstein has reminded me how making classical music more accessible was just as important in our grandparents’ day as it is in ours.<\/p>\n

The film is hokey in how it tries to set up its premise — but it’s not more silly than today’s reality TV exploits. It’s a great slice of history — and a great reminder that if you have a charismatic musician, more than half the work is already done. There are musical visits with Jasha Heifetz and Gregor Piatigorsky later in the film.<\/p>\n

This was made in the early 1950s (this video comes from a Kultur release for television from 1977, now available on DVD here<\/a>).<\/p>\n
