Musical Toronto returns during the week of Aug. 26 to report from the Banff International String Quartet Competition. In the meantime, there is much music to savour both live and online:<\/p>\n

LIVE IN TORONTO<\/strong><\/p>\n

Classical Social continues informal pub jams at Fionn MacCoul’s on Adelaide St, just east of University Ave. every Sunday night. Details here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Music Mondays concerts continue at my church, Holy Trinity, behind the Eaton Centre, at 12:15 p.m. Details here.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Ontario Youth Choir and their director Elroy Friesen present the fruits of 10 days of workshops and training at Grace Church-on-the-Hill on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $20, $15 for students and seniors. For information call 416-923-1144.<\/p>\n

Westerly hipsters are setting up a classical jam at Placebo Space on LakeShore Blvd. in Etobicoke (I think the Long Branch streetcar goes that far) on Monday, Aug. 26. Details here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The most recently arrived star organist in Toronto, David Briggs, usually gives recitals everywhere else but at his home instrument, at St James Cathedral. Take advantage of his Aug. 27 recital, starting at 1 p.m., while you can. Admission is by freewill offering.<\/p>\n

ONLINE: BBC PROMS 2013<\/strong><\/p>\n

The daily feast continues, thanks to BBC Radio 3. The currently available treats include a beautiful Aug. 14 late-night performance from Royal Albert Hall by the Tallis Scholars of music by Taverner and the crazy-but-brilliant Carlo Gesualdo. Check it out here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There are still some concerts from this summer’s Verbier Festival available for free HD streaming.<\/p>\n

Two large-scale treats from the Salzburg Festival are performances of Mahler’s Eighth<\/em> (the “Symphony of a Thousand”) and Verdi’s Don Carlo<\/em> with It Tenor Jonas Kaufmann.<\/p>\n

The next 13 days feature goodies from the Annecy Festival in France, including a recital by soprano Sandrine Piau on Aug. 22. Details here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
