{"id":13762,"date":"2013-07-10T07:49:31","date_gmt":"2013-07-10T12:49:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/?p=13762"},"modified":"2013-07-10T08:06:52","modified_gmt":"2013-07-10T13:06:52","slug":"two-very-different-thursday-music-options-anticipate-start-of-summer-music-festival-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2013\/07\/10\/two-very-different-thursday-music-options-anticipate-start-of-summer-music-festival-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Two very different Thursday options anticipate start of summer music festival season"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_13764\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13764\" style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/07\/holt.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13764\" alt=\"Bryan Holt\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/07\/holt.jpg\" width=\"720\" height=\"477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/07\/holt.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2013\/07\/holt-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bryan Holt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>July 11 has turned up to interesting concert options during a week not notable for its live art music.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>CHAMBER MUSIC IN A PUB<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cellist Bryan Holt, a McGill grad who is about to start a Doctorate at University of Toronto, has organised a pub night of chamber music at Fionn MacCool&#8217;s &#8212; the pub on University Ave just south of the Four Seasons Centre that is the scene of classical music jams on Sunday nights.<\/p>\n<p>This is how Holt describes Thursday&#8217;s programme, which includes violinists Chris Whitely and Eric Fujita as well as violist Rory McLeod:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Four string players will take to the stage to present the music of Brahms, Ives, Grieg and other masters in a less than usual setting: a bar.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.primepubs.com\/#\/own\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fionn MacCool&#8217;s<\/a> has once again opened it&#8217;s doors to the classical community and will host a night featuring some of the most serious pieces from the past. \u00a0The night will begin with a solo percussion set from <i>TorQ&#8217;s<\/i> Dan Morphy, then shifting to two sets of tunes by &#8216;BIG&#8217; name composers. \u00a0The night will be capped off with a premiere by Toronto composer Sean King: an interpretation of Notorious B.I.G for string quartet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The music starts at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $15 ($10 for students and seniors).<\/p>\n<p><strong>ORGAN AND CHORAL MUSIC IN OSHAWA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stately St George&#8217;s Church in the old downtown part of Oshawa is the setting for the closing concert of the annual Summer Institute of Church Music. The organ and choral programme caps a weeklong series of seminars and workshops. It includes the premiere of a new choral work by Toronto&#8217;s Stephanie Martin in honour of Ruth Watson Henderson.<\/p>\n<p>The concert begins at 8 p.m. St George&#8217;s Memorial Anglican Church is at 39 Athol St W. in Oshawa.
