That connection is explored in an event by One-of-a-Kind Concerts \u2014 Baroque Music &amp; Fashion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is more than just a concert,\u201d says organizer <strong>Maya Vasserman<\/strong>. \u201cIt\u2019s a lecture concert.\u201d The event takes place on May 24.<\/p>\n<p>The word itself originates from the Spanish barreuco, as Vasserman points out, which refers to a larger or irregularly shaped pearl. Guan is a 13 year old student of Vasserman.<\/p>\n<p>Music from Bach, Vivaldi, Rameau and Scarlatti and others is on the program, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bach, Toccata in D Minor \u2014 with Yulia Varelas (organ)<\/li>\n<li>Scarlatti, Sonata in C Major \u2014 with Alyson Guan (piano)<\/li>\n<li>Bach, Minuet &amp; Badinerie \u2014 with Dmitriy Varelas (flute) &amp; Maya Vasserman (piano)<\/li>\n<li>Handel, Tornami a Vagheggiar from opera Alcina \u2014 with Holly Chaplin (soprano) &amp; Maya Vasserman (piano)<\/li>\n<li>Bach, Pr\u00e9lude from Cello Suite no. 1 \u2014 with Alina Grunina (guitar)<\/li>\n<li>Bach, Sonata in C Major (Adagio, Minuet I &amp; II) \u2014 with Dmitriy Varelas (flute) &amp; Alina Grunina (guitar)<\/li>\n<li>Handel, Myself I Shall Adore from opera Semele \u2014 with Holly Chaplin (soprano) &amp; Maya Vasserman (piano)<\/li>\n<li>Bach, Allegro from Sonata in G Minor \u2014 with Dmitriy Varelas (flute) &amp; Yulya Varelas (piano)<\/li>\n<li>Bocherrini, Minuet \u2014 with Maya &amp; Eitan Vasserman (Minuet dancers), Dmitriy Varelas (flute) &amp; Yulia Varelas (piano)<\/li>\n<li>Handel, Alla Hornpipe from Water Music \u2014 with Maya Vasserman (piano)<\/li>\n<li>Bach, Air on the G String \u2014 with Dmitriy Varelas (flute)\/organ (Yulia Varelas)<\/li>\n<li>Bach, Siciliana \u2014 with Dmitriy Varelas (flute) &amp; Alyson Guan (piano)<\/li>\n<li>Rameau, Les Sauvages from opera-ballet Les Indes Galantes \u2014 with Alyson Guan (piano)<\/li>\n<li>Gluck, Dance of the Blessed Spirits from opera Orfeo ed Euridice \u2014 with Dmitriy Varelas (flute) &amp; Alyson Guan (piano)<\/li>\n<li>Handel, Rejoice Greatly from Messiah \u2014 with Holly Chaplin (soprano) &amp; Maya Vasserman (piano)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Vasserman says she chose largely familiar works for the event. \u201cBecause they are well known, and because they are not too depressing,\u201d she laughs.<\/p>\n<p>She has been presenting this type of event since 2014. \u201cIt\u2019s about fashion,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd we are going to demonstrate it on ourselves, all musicians,\u201d she adds. \u201cWe will wear [period] costumes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unexpected logistics issues arose. \u201c[Yulia Varelas], the organ player, she told me she absolutely cannot wear a dress because she cannot see the pedals,\u201d she laughs. The dresses include not only voluminous skirts, but puffy underskirts as well. \u201cThe men refused to wear tights,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is, it\u2019s extremely hot to play in these outfits. It\u2019s hot! But it\u2019s a lot of fun. I call myself the Duchess, and my husband is the Duke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The music will be performed in one set. \u201cWe are going to dance a minuet while the flutist and (organist) will accompany us,\u201d she says. Maya and her husband will perform. \u201cWe used to take some ballroom classes. It\u2019s going to be very entertaining,\u201d says Vasserman. \u201cI touch base on everything in the Baroque, starting with architecture and art, and [ending with] fashion and music.\u201d Illustrations will flesh out the ideas. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of entertainment,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to talk about the mouche, the beauty marks. They were basically invented, and how they became a secret language for fashionistas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019ll detail how the wigs are constructed, and why they were worn.
