The Flato Markham Theatre is a busy place, serving as a concert hall as well as a sort of cultural crossroads for an increasingly dense suburban community. It’s heartening to see that classical music and ballet has a place in the venue’s eclectic programming for next season, which was unveiled this week.<\/p>\n

There’s quite a bit for the classical music lover:<\/p>\n

The Chamber Orchestra Kremlin’s only Canadian concert next season will be in Markham. On Oct. 4, they present a great programme that includes an arrangement for strings of Sergei Prokofiev’s magnificent Visions Fugitives<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The Vienna Boys Choir, which is coming to Stratford Summer Music in a couple of months, returns on Nov. 27 for an urban visit.<\/p>\n

There are several dance shows next season in Markham, including Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie’s six-movement SEE, based on an unaccompanied violin sonata by baroque composer Heinrich von Biber, choreographed by James Kudelka, on Feb. 27.<\/p>\n

Violinist Sarah Chang arrives on Feb. 25, and Canada’s own glam-diva, soprano Measha Brueggergosman sings solo on March 8, sharing the bill that day with the Royal Moscow Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty, set to the score by Peter Ilytch Tchaikovsky by Marius Petipa, Lev Ivanov and Anatoly Emelianov (their first of two performances is on Mar. 7).<\/p>\n

Local conductor Kerry Stratton and his Toronto Concert Orchestra have as their featured guests soprano Allison Cecilia Arends and baritone Matthew Zadow, in a programme of light Viennese classics.<\/p>\n

The Flato Markham Theatre is also home to the Kindred Spirits Orchestra, which is presenting six concerts next season, starting with a Wagner and Mendelssohn programme on Nov. 2, featuring pianist Jamie Parker as soloist.<\/p>\n
