The Festival runs from June 3 to 28, and includes more than 50 free and ticketed events, with more than 140 performances at 25 locations in Toronto. Leading Canadian and international artists will offer a broad range of experiences in the fields of theatre, circus, dance, opera, music, magic, film, and public art.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1,000 artists will perform or showcase their work, which includes eight exclusive Canadian commissions and seven world premieres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLuminato is a bright reflection of all that is great about Toronto\u201d says Celia Smith, CEO of Luminato Festival in a statement. \u201cAfter 20 years, I\u2019m immensely proud that our friends and neighbours continue to join us in joyful celebration of this vibrant global city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s theme is PLAY. That includes experiences infused with a child\u2019s sense of play and imagination, stories that talk about equal play, justice, and reconciliation, and performances and more that examine the need to win, the imbalances of power plays, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Olivia Ansell, Artistic Director of Luminato Festival, adds, \u201cFrom playable public art that makes you smile and stare in wonder, hearing breakup stories that mirror the playback tapes of our youth through to discovering the courage of feminists who feigned their own insanity to play for truth. The performance includes DJ Starting from Scratch and guest vocalist Glenn Lewis.<\/li>\n<li>Heartbreak Hotel creates comedy out of a series of breakup ballads with a whimsical sensibility, creating an experience that is both weird and cathartic, where the audience can contemplate heartbreaks while sharing laughter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Movement<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Azzam Mohamed\u2019s Katma (Canadian premiere) creates an immersive all-ages dance experience with a blend of street and club culture.<\/li>\n<li>Theatre of Dreams by world renowned Hofesh Shechter Company offers audiences a wild and otherworldly dance production where both dreams and nightmares are brought to life.<\/li>\n<li>Nimba celebrates the culture of Guinea with a combination of dance, circus, and ritual. Co-presented with dance Immersion in association with TO Live.<\/li>\n<li>Layers of kin by Angela Vitovec (a Canadian commission) creates a living forest of movement, sound, and performance, demonstrating the bonds between humans and plants. Set next to Mies van der Rohe\u2019s iconic TD Centre and Eberhardt Zeidler\u2019s CF Toronto Eaton Centre, Lancelin\u2019s work creates a playful contrast.<\/li>\n<li>20 &amp; Extraordinary: Moments in Photos \u2014 TTC riders will be able to enjoy this exhibition of 20 moments that defined Luminato Festival over the years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Free, Family-Friendly Hubs<\/h3>\n<p>Free, family-friendly hubs bring the Luminato experience to everyone.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Luminato @ Harbourfront returns for the weekend of June 13 \u2013 14, featuring global rhythms, the daring aerial feats of Camion d\u2019Intervention Artistique (CIART), an aerial duet The Air Between Us by Chloe Loftus Dance, and the comedy of Mal Perdedor (Bad Loser).<\/li>\n<li>Luminato @ Sankofa Square brings immersive performances and installations to the heart of downtown on June 12, including Ode to Joy!: Sing with the Symphony (a Canadian commission co-presented with Toronto Symphony Orchestra in association with Toronto Mendelssohn Choir), where everyone is invited to sing along with Beethoven\u2019s Ninth.<\/li>\n<li>Luminato @ Lower Jarvis offers a huge tailgate party with art, games, and music, co-presented by Choice Properties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>En fran\u00e7ais<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Co-presented with Alliance Fran\u00e7aise, France\u2019s jazz innovators NoSax NoClar &amp; Robinson Khoury offer M\u0178A, a blend global sounds, infectious rhythms, and electronica.<\/li>\n<li>Words to be Scene by Compagnie D\u00e9r\u00e9zo \u2014 award-winning French author Maylis de Kerangal provides the monologues from Can\u00f6es that will lead participants on an audio-led odyssey to six locations within downtown Toronto. Presented by Museum of Toronto returns to animate the City Archives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Special Performances<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Tapestry Opera brings 10 Days in a Madhouse by composer Rene Orth and librettist Hannah Moscovitch to the stage. The opera follows the true, groundbreaking story of journalist Nellie Bly, who had herself committed to New York\u2019s Blackwell\u2019s Asylum in order to expose its shocking treatment of its women inmates. A Canadian premiere, co-presented by Canadian Opera Company in association with TO Live.<\/li>\n<li>Penn &amp; Teller: 50 Years of Magic presents the storied duo of magicians for a live performance of mind play. A Canadian premiere co-presented with TO Live.<\/li>\n<li>Play Dead by People Watching invites its audience into a mind-bending world of spectacular acrobatics and movement. Co-presented with TO Live.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>9th Annual Industry Series<\/h3>\n<p>The 9th annual Industry Series brings together artists, producers, presenters, and decision-makers to engage, exchange, and discover new work across multiple disciplines.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Luminato will co-present the inaugural Canadian Festival of New Musicals with The Musical Stage Company and Soulpepper Theatre.
