Two Nordic masterpieces of the classical music repertoire are on the menu on March 28.<\/p>\n<p>Cai is a musician with an international reputation for his artistry and stage presence. He\u2019ll be performing Edvard Grieg\u2019s moving Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16. Sibelius\u2019 Symphony No. 1 in E minor, Op. 39, rounds out the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis program brings together two cornerstone works of the Nordic repertoire,\u201d said Denis Mastromonaco, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrieg\u2019s Piano Concerto remains a favourite with audiences and performers alike, while Sibelius\u2019 First Symphony is a bold and compelling early work from the composer. We\u2019re especially pleased to welcome Sheng Cai, whose artistry and international experience adds brilliance to this program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sheng Cai performs Edvard Grieg\u2019s Ballade in G minor, Op. 24, Folkelevsbilder in 2022:<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5rjTDERbELY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>Pianist Sheng Cai<\/p>\n<p>Sheng Cai began studying piano at Toronto\u2019s Royal Conservatory of Music and at the Juilliard School\u2019s pre-college division in New York. He later earned a Bachelor of Music degree at The New England Conservatory under a full scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>As a teenage artist, he garnered many top prize wins at a number of competitions, including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra Competition (Concours OSM), Toronto Symphony Piano Competition, the International Young Artists Competition of Colorado, and the Bay State Competition in Boston. He was also the youngest finalist and a special prize winner at the Bosendorfer International Piano Competition in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Sheng was recently nominated for the 2025 Oskar Morowetz Award for Excellence in Music Performance by the Ontario Arts Council.<\/p>\n<p>As a concert pianist, he has performed more than 35 piano concertos from Mozart to 21st century repertoire as a guest soloist with more than 60 orchestras worldwide. His performing career has seen him share the stage with the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, Quebec Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Calgary Philharmonic, Edmonton Symphony, Canton Symphony of Ohio, Shanghai Symphony, Shenzhen Symphony, in Germany with Nuremberg Symphoniker, Erfurt Philharmonic, Sinfornieorchester Aachen, Philharmonie Sudwestfalen, Oldenburgisches Staatsorchester, with the Orchestre National de Cannes in France, Biel Solothurn Symphony of Switzerland, Armenian National Philharmonic, Krakow Philharmonic of Poland, North Bohemian Philharmonic of Czech Republic, and Malaga Philharmonic of Spain, among many others.<\/p>\n<p>As a solo recitalist, he\u2019s performed across North America and Europe, including concerts at the Steinway Hall in New York, Jordan Hall in Boston, Chicago&#8217;s International Music Center, the Cleveland Play House, the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth, the Alys Stephens Centre in Birmingham, CBC&#8217;s Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, and many others.<\/p>\n<p>Cai also enjoys performing as a chamber musician, and has collaborated with the Enso String Quartet and Pamina Quartet.<\/p>\n<p>As a recording artist, he has released albums of music by Mozart and Martinu for the CBC, and on the Atma Classique label, works by Schumann, Liszt, Grieg, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky. It incorporates both professional and high level amateur musicians under the direction of Maestro Denis Mastromonaco.
