What good is it to attend a local performance when the future will be decided by forces seemingly beyond our reach and control?

Is music and art frivolous when there are so many important issues at stake?

At Ludwig-Van, we know the opposite to be true. In turbulent times, music, art, and culture are more important than ever. If you’re feeling helpless, creating community through art is the best place to start feeling better — and take real steps towards change.

When forces seem to want to pull society — and the world itself — apart, it’s music, art, and culture that can bring it together.

We’re Better Together

“We’re better together.”

The comment was made by musician and producer Corey Butler in a recent interview with LV.

He was talking about a concert that used music and storytelling to bring people together, to relate histories, and promote understanding between different communities.

It’s not just a feel-good slogan, either. It works.

Scientific studies have shown that even the audience in a classical music concert begins to sync on a physical level, including heart and breathing rates. And, while various aspects of classical music performance make it easy to study, it’s certain to be true of any shared artistic or cultural experience.

That doesn’t even touch the psychological benefits — the shared experience of taking in a performance, or of creating together, builds community. It creates joy, and builds resilience in the face of difficulty.

It opens up your imagination.

In performance, simply bringing together works of disparate origins allows the audience to appreciate the beauty in all of them. Pianist Anastasia Rizikov, a former Torontonian now based in Paris, returned to the city for a recital earlier this year. In her program, she combined the works of Fazil Say, a Turkish pianist and composer who notably saw many of his concerts in Western countries cancelled after expressing his opposition to the situation in Gaza, and those of Ernest Bloch, a composer known for his commitment to Jewish spirituality both in his personal and musical lives.

It may seem like a small detail, but it can change notions of what is possible and what is impossible in a society that is more and more divided along ideological lines. A counter to the constant juxtaposition of us and them.

Not everyone has the time or inclination to become a concert-level musician or professional artist of any stripe. Creation is open to everyone.

Community choirs are an excellent way to express your own creativity while sharing the experience with a crowd of like-minded people. Toronto’s Choir! Choir! Choir! performs routinely in front of big crowds with a fluid participation model. Anyone can participate at one of their shows. Virtually every community across Canada has a community-based choir, and your voice is all that’s needed to join.

Revealing The Humanity Behind The Headlines

When the news and social media are flooded with opposing interpretations of events, outright lies, and about a zillion editorial style video shorts that offer about a zillion different opinions, art and culture can bring the reality and humanity of the headlines to light.

Reality boils down to what happens to the individual — not what talking heads on social media or TV are saying about it. The personal stories brought to life in music, theatre, dance or other art forms foster a deeper understanding of issues both close to home and far, far away.

It was a 2010 production of the play Where The Blood Mixes by Kevin Loring, starring Billy Merasty and Ben Cardinal, that, for me as a non-Indigenous person, really brought home the true generational cost of the infamous residential school system. If you simply followed the headlines, you’d assume this was a situation that was over, dealt with. As the play makes clear, the costs carried by Indigenous people extend from generation to generation, and even to someone outside those communities, that fact suddenly becomes very real.

When the media itself offers multiple, and conflicting, interpretations of events, how can you know what’s true?

The Daughters of Donbas are both a musical and activist group. They’re bringing to light the plight of the stolen children of Ukraine. It’s a well documented practice of the Russian forces currently at war with Ukraine to kidnap children, and others, and sent to so-called “filtration camps” where the goal is to weaken resistance to the war. An estimated 20,000 children have been abducted so far, and only about 1,600 returned to their families. The Daughters of Donbas tell their stories in song, raise funds, and talk about the practice on tour around the world. They support the efforts to rescue those children with concrete action.

Music and other arts offer a way of understanding what’s going on in the news that counters the sensationalistic headlines. Knowledge, and understanding, lead to action.

The Stories Of The Overlooked

Violence on a societal scale often involves suppressing cultures — it’s a way of denigrating a group of people in order to eradicate them. That’s what filtration camps are all about.

Musician and composer Anna Pigdorna’s latest album is titled Invented Folksongs. In an era when it’s questioned whether there is anything called Ukrainian culture, she spent years studying traditional Ukrainian vocal techniques and adapting them for her own new musical compositions. She’s bringing those traditions into the present, and forward into the future.

Where there is life, there is hope, as the saying goes.

The rationale behind the Canadian and US policy of establishing residential schools and forcing Indigenous and Inuit children to attend them, separating them from their families for extended periods of time, was similar. The so-called Sixties Scoop was also a practice of taking Indigenous children away from their families and adopting them into white households.

Eradication of culture was the goal, with the idea of making those children assimilate to mainstream North American culture.

What happened instead was a disruption of lives and multi-generational trauma.

The resurgence of First Nations and Inuit cultures in recent years is both a rebuke and defiance of that principle. A great deal of damage was done, however, including almost eradicating some Indigenous languages.

Musician and composer Jeremy Dutcher works in various ways to help preserve the Wolastoqey language, including recording his songs in Wolastoqey, and participating in film and TV projects that foster East Coast Indigenous culture and languages, among other endeavours.

Telling all of our stories via art and culture is a very powerful means of spreading understanding, compassion, and community, as opposed to division and animosity, along with preserving those traditions.

Joy Is Resistance

The Choral is a film starring Ralph Fiennes.
