Critics and audiences melted and gushed over tenor Jonas Kaufmann’s portrayal of Parsifal in Richard Wagner’s great opera. The live-in-HD Metropolitan Opera performance from March 2 is being reprised at Cineplex theatres today.<\/p>\n

There is another reason to take refuge from the vestiges of winter: this high-Canadian-content production (the director is Montrealer Fran\u00e7ois Girard and the sets were designed by Torontonian Michael Levine) is coming to a future Canadian Opera Company season, fulfilling one of general director Alexander Neef’s fondest wishes from when he moved to Toronto.<\/p>\n

A great cast awaits. Besides Kaufmann, the Wagner It Boy of the decade, we have Katarina Dalayman as Kundry, Peter Mattei as Amfortas, Ren\u00e9 Pape as Gurnemanz and Evgeny Nikitin as Klingsor. The amazing Daniele Gatti conducts. The 6-hour Wagner-immersion starts at noon.<\/p>\n

It’s a very Wagner sort of day when it comes to the Met. Today’s Saturday Afternoon at the Opera<\/em> broadcast on CBC Radio 2 is Siegfried<\/em>, starting at 11 a.m. Eastern.<\/p>\n

This is the third installment of a full run through Robert Lepage’s Ring Cycle<\/em>. The conductor is Fabio Luisi. The title role is being sung by strapping Texan Jay Hunter Morris. Deborah Voigt is scheduled to sing Br\u00fcnhilde.<\/p>\n

Available on your personal computing device anytime from medici.tv is a lovely high-definition solo piano recital by rapidly rising French pianist Adam Laloum from the auditorium buried under the public square at the Louvre museum in Paris.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old from southern France plays with an uncommon grace. The intense 19th century programme he offered at the Louvre on Wednesday juxtaposes very different styles of music from the the same ethnic and geographic source: Franz Schubert’s A Major Piano Sonata No. 13<\/em>, D664, and Robert Schumann’s showy Op. 20 Humoreske<\/em> (he was also supposed to play the Op. 119 pieces by Johannes Brahms, but those haven’t materialised online).<\/p>\n

Also available on medici.tv is a substantial concert from Montreal’s Maison symphonique featuring the Montreal Symphony, pianist Till Fellner and music director Kent Nagano.<\/p>\n

Fellner plays Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3<\/em>. We get a nice cameo by principal cellist Brian Manker in Rossini’s Overture to Guillaume Tell<\/em>. The centrepiece of the programme is Bruckner’s Symphony No. 6<\/em> — the Bruckner symphony for people who don’t like Bruckner symphonies. You’ll find the concert here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
