The concert is a showcase for the two emerging singers setting out on professional careers.<\/p>\n<p>This will be the second Two Sopranos concert. \u201cWe already did our first Two Sopranos concert in London in December,\u201d Julia says. Both singers are graduates of the University of Western Ontario. Julia graduated in 2024, Angela in the spring of 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Ludwig-Van talked to the two vocalists about the concert, and their careers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DJyER0Pw--8?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<h2>Two Sopranos: Julia LoRusso &amp; Angela Gjurichanin<\/h2>\n<h3>Julia LoRusso<\/h3>\n<p>Julia performed as a soloist in the London Community Orchestra\u2019s 2018 Young Soloist Concert, and was featured in Opera Nuova\u2019s Coast to Coast recital series in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>She made her operatic debut as Lauretta in Puccini\u2019s Gianni Schicchi and then Morgana in Handel\u2019s Alcina in 2021, and her\u00a0 European debut at the Berlin Opera Academy in Germany, singing the role of Despina in Mozart\u2019s Cosi fan tutte. She has performed with a variety of chamber ensembles and orchestras, and was a Prize Winner at the 2024 Toronto Mozart Vocal Competition.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wkr6v5nkHy0?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<h3>Angela Gjurichanin<\/h3>\n<p>Angela was born in Macedonia, where she began studying music at the age of six. After graduating from a music high school in 2015, she immigrated to Saskatchewan with her family. The adjustment to living in Canada was difficult, and when she began her undergraduate studies in music at the University of Saskatchewan, she intended on focusing on theory and academia. It was a professor who convinced her she was born to sing. She moved to London, Ontario, to complete her graduate studies in music. Much of that took place during the COVID pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>She was one of the district winners of the prestigious Laffont Competition in 2021, and won the Gordon Wallis Opera Competition in 2022. Since then, she\u2019s performed with the Regina Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera Studio of Weimar, and Grand River Opera, among others.<\/p>\n<p>Collaborative pianist <strong>Paul Digout<\/strong> works extensively at the University of Western Ontario as well as in other programs across Canada and in Europe, including Opera NUOVA, Halifax Opera Workshop and the Yorkshire Opera workshop.<\/p>\n<h2>The Interview<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m from London, and I did my undergrad there as well in music,\u201d Julia explains. She mentions dedicated professors at Western, including Jackalyn Short, a sentiment which Angela echoes.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s next after the concert? \u201cI am an incoming member of the Vancouver Opera Young Artists\u2019 Program,\u201d LoRusso says. She\u2019ll be heading out to the west coast for her residency in September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concert is somewhat of a send-off,\u201d Julia adds.<\/p>\n<p>Angela will continue pursuing her career in London. \u201cI\u2019m doing the audition circuit, and performing locally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julia has other engagements arranged in Vancouver as well. \u201cI\u2019m going to performing as a soloist with the Vancouver Bach Choir in February,\u201d Julia says.<\/p>\n<p>Along with auditions, Angela is also looking forward to the holiday season later this year. \u201cI\u2019m excited to do another Messiah with Choral Connection in December. It\u2019s meant that, at university productions, for example, they\u2019d be competing for the same roles \u2014 rather than singing together. It\u2019s also meant tweaking arrangements at times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor us, it\u2019s also an opportunity. Even in school, we never got to perform together,\u201d Angela says.<\/p>\n<p>The two were often double cast in the same roles. \u201cYou get to watch the other person, but never get to perform together,\u201d Gjurichanin adds.<\/p>\n<p>Each concert is a chance to showcase something a little different than the usual operatic role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a nice even split between us two,\u201d LoRusso says of the program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do it back and forth between the songs, who sings the highest line,\u201d Angela adds.
