Award-winning British musical comedian Tamar Broadbent is making her Toronto Fringe Festival debut this summer with her show Plus One. Through musical comedy, Plus One looks at pregnancy and new motherhood with an uncensored and honest lens.<\/p>\n

Society places a lot of ridiculous expectations on new moms, and the show uses humour to bring out the truth. Plus One runs until July 12 at the Alumnae Theatre as part of the annual summer festival.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew I wanted to have a baby, but the idea of being a \u2018mom\u2019 really scared me, it felt like you had to disappear from the world.\u201d said Tamar Broadbent <\/strong>in a statement. <\/strong>\u201cFrom giving up work to dealing with lightning crotch, it all seemed so much harder than my husband\u2019s job of just bringing snacks to the hospital! I wrote this show to turn the chaos, fear, and unfairness of new motherhood into something cathartic and funny, and to remind other moms that they\u2019re not alone. Most of all, I wanted to show my daughter that becoming a mom doesn\u2019t mean you stop dreaming big. And now… here we are at the Toronto Fringe!\u201d<\/p>\n

Plus One<\/h2>\n

Plus One features 10 original songs that are performed live on the piano, including titles like I Tried Hard to Breastfeed, But It Sucked, A Mother\u2019s Place is in the Wrong!, and Don\u2019t You Wanna Have a Natural Birth?!<\/p>\n

Broadbent takes on the gamut of experiences in what she\u2019s calling her most personal show yet. She tackles everything from fertility tests to hospital snacks, to the ever changing definition of what society calls a \u201cgood mom\u201d. It\u2019s a take based on truth, finding humour in the midst of the confusion.<\/p>\n

Above all, she wants to remind her audience that your own identity doesn\u2019t have to be lost whenyou become a mother.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a celebration of the real life world of parenting in all its beauty \u2014 and laughs.<\/p>\n

Tamar Broadbent<\/h3>\n

Tamar is a comedian, improviser, singer-songwriter, actor, writer. She\u2019s written and performed in five solo comedy shows, including Get Ugly, which was nominated for Best Comedy at Fringeworld, and Bet Life, which went on to be staged at the SoHo pPlayhouse in New York. She\u2019s worked extensively for BBC Radio 4, including writing and performing songs and sketches, and co-wrote the book for Club Mex, produced by Global Musicals. She won the Stiles & Drewe Best New Song Award.<\/p>\n

TV credits include Doctors, The Bill and Lee Nelson\u2019s Well Funny People, and she has appeared on Comedy Central Online.<\/p>\n

She took a break from her performing career, previously writing about the single life with songs like Tube Ride of Shame, and got married (to a Canadian), and had a baby. The show brings her on stage story up to date.<\/p>\n
