Part of the new energy comes from a new artistic director Olivia Ansell, former Festival Director of Sydney Festival and Head of Contemporary Performance for Sydney Opera House. Celia notes that Olivia has moved to Toronto from Australia with her family. They first met in Sydney. \u201cI met Olivia and went, wow.\u201d Olivia had been with the Sydney Festival for four years. \u201cIt\u2019s a very, very large tourism magnet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ansell has been attending Luminato as well. \u201cShe\u2019s been to the last two festivals,\u201d Smith says. They\u2019ve been working together for about a year and a half long distance. The focus of their conversations: \u201cHow can we turn up the heat in Toronto?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Upping the volume of activities has been one of the results. \u201cWe have at least twice as many experiences as in past years,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>That includes multitudes of free events, exhibitions and experiences from downtown Toronto to parks in Brampton and Scarborough. The idea is to hear classical music untethered from the usual traditions, including some of the most intriguing characters from the opera canon. Performers will move throughout the space in an event that\u2019s billed as \u201cpart ritual, part concert, part revolution\u201d. The event is directed by Tapestry\u2019s Michael Hidetoshi Mori.<\/p>\n<p>Mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szab\u00f3 stars as the titular Queen, with performers Ryan Downey, Michael Eusebio, Alex Hetherington, Alexander Hajek, McKenzie Warriner, and Justin Welsh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s quite different than your standard opera fare,\u201d Celia says.<\/p>\n<p>Grammy Award-winning artist Larnell Lewis, who worked with the artist on multiple occasions, has developed <strong>A Glimpse of Quincy: Celebrating the Legendary Quincy Jones<\/strong>, a tribute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s put together a roster of artists who\u2019ve worked with Quincy.\u201d It turns out that Jones worked in Toronto frequently over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Luminato includes a lot of music, but it\u2019s also about highlighting the experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything is cross-disciplinary,\u201d Smith says.<\/p>\n<p>That includes <strong>Theo x Travis: Jazz is Dead<\/strong>, a fusion of jazz, hip-hop, and R&amp;B, that features GRAMMY-nominated trumpeter, composer, producer and vocalist Theo Croker with dancer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2024\/08\/12\/preview-toronto-international-tap-dance-festival-returns-third-iteration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travis Knights<\/a>, co-presented by dance Immersion.<\/p>\n<p>Polish stage director Krystian Lada\u2019s <strong>Dawn Chorus<\/strong> takes Union Station and transforms it into a dynamic concert space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix Toronto based choirs will have their moment in different parts of Union Station,\u201d she explains. Gradually, they will come together for a larger piece at the end of the performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s interesting to bring a creator from outside to work with people here,\u201d she says. The venue was made for big acoustics. \u201cIt\u2019s an extraordinary place to sing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other musical and sound experiences include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Immersed<\/strong> by Justin Gray, an audio experience that blends Indian classical music, jazz, and electronic soundscapes, co-presented with TD Music Hall;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dusk Soundscapes<\/strong> by Maria Ch\u00e1vez, a live DJ set co-presented with the Art Gallery of Ontario.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_114545\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-114545\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-114545\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/Night_Shifts-Photo-by-Nadya-Kwandibens.jpg\" alt=\"Night\/Shifts (Photo: Nadya Kwandibens)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/Night_Shifts-Photo-by-Nadya-Kwandibens.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/Night_Shifts-Photo-by-Nadya-Kwandibens-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/Night_Shifts-Photo-by-Nadya-Kwandibens-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/Night_Shifts-Photo-by-Nadya-Kwandibens-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-114545\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Night\/Shifts (Photo: Nadya Kwandibens)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>DAY:NIGHT<\/h3>\n<p>It was Ansell who spontaneously came up with the theme during a previous visit to Toronto.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said, this is a city that never sleeps,\u201d recalls Celia. \u201cShe said, Let\u2019s think of a day-night theme.\u201d A festival was the ideal way to explore the city on a broad and inclusive basis. \u201cA festival can do that; you can place yourself in unusual places in the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the works that directly address that theme is award-winning photographer Nadya Kwandibens\u2019 (Anishinaabe\/Ojibwe) <strong>Night\/Shifts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a gorgeous series of photographs of people who work at night.\u201d The photo series will be displayed from June 4 to July 30 at a series of TTC stations, including Jane, Wilson, Bathurst, Osgoode, and Queen Stations. \u201cPeople that you might not see if you\u2019re not a night owl yourself,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s an exciting observation about the city,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s an energy level there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harbourfront will be a hub for a lot of the action. \u201cLots of free stuff at Harbourfront,\u201d she says. That includes <strong>Terceradix Luminarium<\/strong>, a large immersive sound and light show by UK artists Architects of Air that you walk through \u2013 sure to intrigue kids and adults alike.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First Breath<\/strong> by UK\u2019s Luke Jerram celebrates each new morning in Toronto with a light installation.<\/p>\n<p>Other free public art installations and performances include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>THAW<\/strong> by Australia\u2019s Legs on the Wall, an eight-hour performance involving a 2.7-tonne block of ice suspended over Sankofa Square that makes climate change into a concrete experience;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rainbow Dreams<\/strong> by Japanese born, Australian based, Hiromi Tango creates three rainbow-filled environments at Brookfield Properties with a focus on well-being;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dandyism<\/strong> by Rwandan born, UK based Ziza Patrick celebrates the defiant swagger of African style through street and contemporary dance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XnYpVN4157Q?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<h3>More Performance<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cAn Oak Tree is a theatre piece by British creator Tim Crouch,\u201d Smith mentions<\/p>\n<p><strong>An Oak Tree<\/strong> is undergoing a 20th anniversary resurgence in London, where Crouch originated the work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTim stars in it, but a different actor plays the part each night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a story about loss, presented in partnership with TO Live. The kicker is, the actors don\u2019t know their parts, and Tim guides them through it each night \u2014 and, the audience only knows which guest artist will perform at curtain time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt turns everything you know about theatre upside down,\u201d Smith says. \u201cA great roster of Canadian actors have stepped up.\u201d That roster includes Amanda Cordner, Amrit Kaur, Qasim Khan, Daniel MacIvor, Karen Robinson, and Jean Yoon, with more to be announced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a bit of a grab bag as to what you\u2019ll get,\u201d she adds. \u201cThat wasn\u2019t hard to find fabulous people [to take part].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another innovative take on traditional theatre sees Peru\u2019s Teatro La Plaza\u2019s take on <strong>Shakespeare\u2019s Hamlet<\/strong>, reimagined with eight actors with Down syndrome.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What the Day Owes to the Nigh<\/strong>t by Compagnie Herv\u00e9 KOUBI (France\/Algeria), produced in partnership with TO Live and Fall For Dance North, is a performance that blends capoeira, martial arts, and Sufi traditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful dance piece,\u201d Celia says.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xBIYGqqBAPc?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<h3>Final Thoughts<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThere is something for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From walk though installations to sit down theatre, there are multiple options. \u201cLooking forward, we\u2019re on a track, we\u2019re interested in how a festival not only tells our stories,\u201d Smith says. \u201cHow do you really turn on the heat for that time, and draw attention to other things that are going on in the city?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s about what the festival can do, and be, for Toronto and people from near and far who come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really ambitious, exciting.
