Each winner receives a cash award of $25,000, and each prot\u00e9g\u00e9 received $10,000.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, each of the remaining 10 finalists receives a prize of $2,000, with a total of $195,000 in prizes. The winners were announced at a ceremony at Toronto\u2019s Gardiner Museum on May 5, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The Johannas recognize mid-career Ontario-based artists who have made a significant impact in the fields of dance, theatre, and music\/opera, as well as in the public eye, and are engaged in ongoing innovative practices. The prize is named in honour of Johanna Metcalf, who led the work of the Metcalf Foundation, founded by her father-in-law George Cedric Metcalf as a charitable foundation in 1960, for more than four decades.<\/p>\n<h3>Winners &amp; Prot\u00e9g\u00e9s<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to celebrate such a talented group of artists through the Johannas this year. Their work exemplifies the resilience, creativity, and bold vision that define Ontario\u2019s artistic landscape,\u201d said <strong>Owen Pallett<\/strong>, 2025 Johannas Chair, in a statement. \u201cAs Chair, I\u2019m honoured to be part of this process and excited to see the incredible impact these winners and their prot\u00e9g\u00e9s will continue to have on the future of the arts. To know that the artistic practice is alive and well in Ontario, and that we\u2019re supporting these trailblazers, is incredibly inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2024\/04\/03\/interview-composer-kevin-lau-talks-ballet-composition-kimikos-pearl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kevin Lau<\/a>, composer (Ottawa, Ontario) with prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Michelle Lorimer, composer;<\/li>\n<li>Alain Doom, playwright and actor (Ottawa, Ontario) with prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Dillon Orr, director;<\/li>\n<li>Sarah Gartshore, playwright and director (Sudbury, Ontario) with prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Adam Francis Proulx, theatre creator and puppeteer;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2024\/06\/19\/interview-director-weyni-mengesha-actor-amy-rutherford-talk-soulpeppers-streetcar-named-desire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Weyni Mengesha<\/a>, director (Toronto, Ontario) with prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Luke Reece, poet, playwright, and director;<\/li>\n<li>d&#8217;bi.young anitafrika, dub poet, playwright, dramaturge, and scholar (Brampton, Ontario) with prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Sashoya Simpson, writer, storyteller, and theatre practitioner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The remaining ten finalists for the 2025 Johannas were: Penny Couchie, Christine Friday, Donna Grantis, Haviah Mighty, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2024\/07\/25\/preview-yensa-festival-v-2-offers-black-flames-performances-ways-celebrate-black-women-dance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lua Shayenne<\/a>, Louis Sim\u00e3o, Vanese Smith, Adrian Sutherland, Marni Walsh, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/2024\/02\/13\/scrutiny-naishi-wang-jean-abreus-deciphers-exercise-expressive-physicality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Naishi Wang<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Artists are nominated for the Johannas by their peers, in partnership with the Ontario Arts Council.
