Taking inspiration from Toronto\u2019s upcoming role in the World Cup, Music Director Gustavo Gimeno\u2019s programming emphasizes cross-border connections.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a varied season and line-up that offers both crowd pleasers and new voices, a friendly space for young audiences, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights include a gala where<strong> Lang Lang<\/strong> will perform Beethoven\u2019s \u201cEmperor\u201d Concerto, and the Canadian Premi\u00e8re of a new, TSO co-commissioned Concerto for Orchestra written and conducted by Japanese composer<strong> Joe Hisaishi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGustavo Gimeno has programmed a truly exceptional 2025\/26 season, highlighting the power of music to transcend borders and transform listeners,\u201d says <strong>Mark Williams<\/strong>, Beck Family CEO of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. \u201cThere is something for everyone at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and together we will enjoy the wide variety of classical, Pops, film, and family concerts that bring us together as a community of music lovers all season long and community is what it\u2019s all about. Yet, what excites me most is the diversity of the programs we have crafted \u2014 there is something for every listener to discover and enjoy. The magic of live music is in the shared moment, the way it connects us to something greater, and I am greatly looking forward to exploring that connection with our wonderful audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The blockbuster opener spotlights Carl Orff\u2019s Carmina Burana. Gimeno and the orchestra will be joined by the <strong>Toronto Mendelssohn Choir<\/strong>, the <strong>Toronto Children\u2019s Chorus<\/strong>, and three soloists: soprano <strong>Julie Roset<\/strong> (an Operalia winner in her TSO d\u00e9but), tenor <strong>Andrew Haji<\/strong>, and baritone <strong>Sean Michael Plumb<\/strong> (also in his TSO d\u00e9but). Gustavo Gimeno selects the Spotlight Artists each year based on both technical virtuosity and versatility. Each will perform two programs.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian pianist Bruce Liu performs Mozart\u2019s Piano Concerto No. 23 and Rachmaninoff\u2019s Piano Concerto No. 2 in his highly anticipated return to the TSO stage after his acclaimed 2022 debut.<\/p>\n<p>American violinist and conductor Joshua Bell will both perform and lead. He\u2019ll perform the Canadian Premi\u00e8re of a recently rediscovered Violin Concerto by mid-20th-century Ukrainian composer Thomas de Hartmann. He\u2019ll lead and play Florence Price\u2019s Adoration and Bruch\u2019s Violin Concerto No. 1, and in the same program, he\u2019ll conduct Beethoven\u2019s overture to Egmont and Symphony No. 7.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Dy0cmz68gIg?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<h2>Soloists &amp; Guest Artists<\/h2>\n<p>The season closes with Beethoven\u2019s Ninth, featuring as soloists soprano <strong>Ambur Braid<\/strong>, mezzo-soprano <strong>Ema Nikolovska<\/strong>, tenor <strong>Saimir Pirgu<\/strong>, and bass <strong>Jongmin Park<\/strong>. All will be making their debuts with the TSO.<\/p>\n<h3>Guest Conductors<\/h3>\n<p>TSO audiences will be able to experience the work of a number of prominent artists making their debuts with the organization in 2025\/26:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Eva Ollikainen<\/strong> will conduct the suite from Stravinsky\u2019s The Firebird;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stephanie Childress<\/strong> will conduct R. Pianist <strong>Jean-Yves Thibaudet<\/strong> performs Saint-Sa\u00ebns: Piano Concerto No. 5 \u201cEgyptian\u201d with the <strong>National Arts Centre Orchestra<\/strong> and conductor <strong>Alexander Shelley.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two conductors make long-awaited returns to the TSO podium during 2025\/26.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Paavo J\u00e4rvi<\/strong> makes a return to conduct the concerto by fellow Estonian K\u00f5rvits;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Franz Welser-M\u00f6st<\/strong> makes his first appearance with the TSO in over 35 years to conduct a suite he compiled from R. Strauss\u2019s Der Rosenkavalier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Toronto audiences will also welcome the return of conductors <strong>Elim Chan<\/strong> (Shostakovich\u2019s Symphony No. 9), <strong>Dalia Stasevska<\/strong> (Sibelius\u2019s Finlandia, with the TSO and TSYO performing side by side), former RBC Resident Conductor<strong> Earl Lee<\/strong> (Beethoven\u2019s Symphony No. 5), and Conductor Emeritus <strong>Peter Oundjian<\/strong> (Elgar\u2019s \u201cEnigma\u201d Variations).<\/p>\n<h2>Premieres<\/h2>\n<p>Oundjian\u2019s concert also includes the Canadian Premi\u00e8re of <strong>Joan Tower<\/strong>\u2019s suite from her Concerto for Orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>The 2025\/26 season\u2019s programming includes a total of 16 premi\u00e8res:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Francisco Coll<\/strong> (Lilith Symphony, North American Premi\u00e8re\/TSO Commission);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carlos Simon<\/strong> (Fate Now Conquers, Canadian Premi\u00e8re);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Philip Glass<\/strong> (\u201cMeetings Along the Edge\u201d from Passages, Canadian Premi\u00e8re);<\/li>\n<li>A new work by Indigenous composer <strong>Cris Derksen<\/strong> that was commissioned in partnership with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) as part of the TSO\u2019s Art of Healing program (World Premi\u00e8re).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Original pieces by RBC Affiliate Composer <strong>Liam Ritz<\/strong>, former NextGen Composer <strong>Bekah Simms<\/strong>, and three new NextGen Composers \u2014 <strong>Sophie Dupuis<\/strong>, <strong>Jesse Plessis<\/strong>, and <strong>Darren Xu<\/strong> \u2014 will also receive World Premi\u00e8res.<\/p>\n<h3>That\u2019s not all&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>That covers the Masterworks programs only.
