Australia\u2019s Circa, a circus company with a theatrical sensibility, reimagines Swan Lake, throws in the Ugly Duckling story and much more, and the result is Duck Pond.<\/p>\n<p>The show will hit Toronto\u2019s Meridian Arts Centre\u2019s Lyric Theatre from January 30 to February 1 as a presentation of TOLive, before moving on to Vancouver, Montr\u00e9al and Qu\u00e9bec City. The tour comes to Canada directly from their gig at the Royal Festival Hall in London, U.K.<\/p>\n<h3>Circa &amp; Duck Pond<\/h3>\n<p>Circa was established in 2004, with a home base in Brisbane, Australia. Their tours and multiple productions have taken them to more than 45 countries and two million audience members. Their signature style melds extreme physicality and gravity defying aerials with emotional and theatrical performances.<\/p>\n<p>Duck Pond saw its premiere in 2023 in Brisbane, Australia, and is choreographed for 10 performers. It\u2019s not the first of the company\u2019s shows to combine classical music and story adaptations. What\u2019s become characteristic of their performances is a stunning physicality combined with shots of laugh out loud humour.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a very contemporary take on the idea, in other words. Tchaikovsky\u2019s music is the basis that composer\/sound designer Jethro Woodward used to create the soundtrack.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NduPfzeNKR8?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<h3>The Story<\/h3>\n<p>A love triangle arises between a burlesque and besequinned Black Swan, a hapless Prince, and the Ugly Duckling in white. There is a duck army with sequinned flippers, and in the end, the moral of the story is about finding your true self.<\/p>\n<p>Director <strong>Yaron Lifschitz<\/strong> and his creative team create a subtle palette of black and gold, with performers in velvet catsuits.
