John and conductor Peter Oundjian, the TSO\u2019s Music Director from 2004 to 2018 and now conductor emeritus, have a longstanding friendship.<\/p>\n<p>Oundjian\u2019s initial invitation saw Adams come to Toronto for the then-annual New Creations Festival, an initiative of Peter\u2019s. John conducted his City Noir, a TSO co-commission. \u201cIt&#8217;s a wonderful orchestra,\u201d he says of his experience. He came back for the same festival in 2014, with his own music as a focal point, including the Canadian premiere of his 1996 piece\u00a0Slonimsky\u2019s Earbox. \u201cI was able to do a substantial work of my own. Peter has been a supporter.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_108943\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108943\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-108943\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/10\/John-Adams-b.jpg\" alt=\"American composer\/conductor John Adams (Photo: Deborah O'Grady)\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/10\/John-Adams-b.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/10\/John-Adams-b-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/10\/John-Adams-b-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ludwig-van.com\/toronto\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/10\/John-Adams-b-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-108943\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">American composer\/conductor John Adams (Photo: Musacchio-Ianniello-Pasqualini)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>John Adams, Composer<\/h2>\n<p>Now in his 70s, Adams\u2019 path to becoming one of the most prominent composers of the modern era found its first spark in his own persistence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was a little kid, that was the great era of early Leonard Bernstein,\u201d he recalls. \u201cMy parents didn&#8217;t want to get a television, because they thought I&#8217;d stop reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That meant that he had to sneak to the neighbour\u2019s next door to watch TV, and that\u2019s where he first saw Bernstein\u2019s famous Young People\u2019s Concerts with the New York Philharmonic. When he told his parents, both of whom were musicians, it convinced his mother to finally take the plunge and get a TV set of their own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was an inspiration,\u201d he said of the concerts, where he heard American popular songs played alongside the music of traditional classical composers. \u201cThat influenced me greatly; I was ten years old at the time.\u201d It was 1956, the 200th anniversary of Mozart\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up in a very small town in New Hampshire,\u201d he says. He remembers reading a biography of Mozart\u2019s written for children. That\u2019s essentially what inspired him to become a composer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was very lucky in that there was a community orchestra in the town where I grew up,\u201d he notes.<\/p>\n<p>That community orchestra is where he began taking music lessons and even got his start conducting at a summer music camp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the time I got to college, I had [&#8230;] experience in conducting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Studies at Harvard followed. There were two student orchestras at the university at the time, one of which was conducted by a student who got the job via an audition. Adams was able to earn that position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started conducting at a relatively early age.\u201d Still, student orchestras don\u2019t necessarily prepare you for life in a professional environment, as he recalls. \u201cWhen I think back to my first experiences with professional orchestras, I wince.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He calls the art of conducting \u201cextremely mysterious\u201d. \u201cIt&#8217;s as much a social skill as it is a musical skill,\u201d he says. That\u2019s particularly true when you consider that the time spent rehearsing with professional orchestras is limited.<\/p>\n<p>As a conductor, it means maintaining focus. \u201cYou have to get right to work. Musicians really don&#8217;t like to talk too much, other than saying the essential things.\u201d However, as he points out, it\u2019s still necessary to establish a connection of some kind. \u201cWe&#8217;ve come a long way from the era of Fritz Reiner and Toscanini&#8230; the autocrats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s aware of the realities that face orchestral musicians, which can vary by location. \u201cI&#8217;ve been very spoiled throughout my adult career, because I get to work with the very best orchestras,\u201d Adams says. He notes the long hours and precarious job security faced by many versatile and talented musicians in various parts of the world.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/deA0YuTb2Jo?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<h3>John Adams\u2019 Frenzy<\/h3>\n<p>The concert includes the Canadian premiere of Adams\u2019 Frenzy, a co-commission of the TSO, London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonie Luxembourg, Konzerthaus Dortmund, Philharmonie de Paris, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The piece received its world premiere with the London Symphony Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle, to whom it is dedicated, in March 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we write a piece, the first thing we have to do is talk about it,\u201d he says. \u201cI call the piece Frenzy \u2014 I didn&#8217;t know what to call it when I started. It&#8217;s only really frenetic in the last couple of minutes,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know I&#8217;m going to go to my grave [&#8230;] apologizing for this title,\u201d the composer says. Much of the piece, as he points out, is rather buoyant and colourful in nature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote it for my friend <strong>Simon Rattle<\/strong>. We&#8217;ve known each other for over 40 years,\u201d he explains. As such, he wrote for Rattle\u2019s preferences. \u201cI&#8217;m in a luxurious position of having the best conductors in the world doing my music,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>That fact keeps his music in performance in many concert halls around the world, in addition to his own performances as a composer\/conductor, a fairly rare combination these days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComposers who conduct well are a very small crowd these days,\u201d he acknowledges, although he points out it was commonplace in the 19th century. \u201cIt&#8217;s become much more of a complicated [&#8230;] skill.\u201d He cites Matthew Aucoin as another example of a contemporary artist who\u2019s adept at both skillsets.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s pleased that Frenzy\u2019s first Canadian performance will happen in Toronto. \u201cI&#8217;m really delighted that the Toronto Symphony is a co-commissioner,\u201d he says, citing his previous positive experiences working with Peter Oundjian.<\/p>\n<p>The TSO was on Adams\u2019 radar long before that, though.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the big moments of musical discovery for me when I was a student was a recording of Messiaen&#8217;s Turangal\u00eela-Symphonie with Seiji Ozawa.\u201d The recording, made in 1968 with the TSO during Ozawa\u2019s tenure as Music Director, was highly praised by the composer himself.<\/p>\n<p>This time around, in 2024, a connection emerges with the TSO\u2019s executive director <strong>Mark Williams<\/strong> that stems from Williams&#8217; previous gig as chief artistic and operations officer of the Cleveland Orchestra (2013 to 2022). Austrian-British lyric soprano Anna Prohaska is based in Berlin, where she studied at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music. Professionally, she is a member of the permanent ensemble at the Berlin State Opera, and is a frequent collaborator with the Berlin Philharmonic. Among her many accolades and awards is an International Classical Music Award in the Baroque vocal category for her album Serpent &amp; Fire in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019ll be performing accompanied by Adams\u2019 own orchestral arrangement of Debussy\u2019s Le Livre de Baudelaire. \u201cUsually they are done by a soprano,\u201d he says. \u201cIf you read Beaudelaire, [though] it&#8217;s really a man talking about a woman.\u201d Adams recalls performing it once with English tenor Ian Bostridge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s actually a group of five songs, rather early Debussy,\u201d he says. \u201cIt ends so beautifully, just up in the stratosphere. I always felt, when playing them on the piano, that they were ready to be orchestrated. It\u2019s just that Debussy never got around to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hears the influence of Wagner\u2019s Parsifal in parts of it, a work that he\u2019s also orchestrated, noting that during Debussy\u2019s leaner years, he\u2019d make extra money by accompanying singers as they practised their Wagner repertoire.<\/p>\n<p>During the second half, Prohaska returns to sing \u201cThis is prophetic!\u201d from Adams\u2019 iconic opera Nixon in China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe excerpt from Nixon in China is one of my favourite compositions. The last time I heard it, Renee Fleming sang it in a new production in Paris,\u201d he recalls. \u201cIt was amusing to see her dressed as Pat Nixon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He mentions the superlative text by Alice Goodman, calling it \u201cone of the great opera librettos\u201d.
