Haydn often gets shafted in music history, simply considered the ‘nice’ grandpa (with the exception of the string quartets); his works are often discussed as transitional developmental material of the classical style, rather than serious artistic works of their own. Sherkin digging out Haydn and aligning him with contemporary works is a welcoming sight, to illustrate how Haydn’s finer writing has inspired musicians, even in the 20th century. Stephen Runge (piano), Chantelle Grant (mezzo soprano), and Ivan Ivanovich (viola), will join Sherkin.
