Exploration and renewal through live music is the overarching theme for the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArt is a powerful force that can challenge perceptions, inspire change, and unite us across cultural boundaries,\u201d says <strong>Lawrence Cherney<\/strong> in a statement. \u201cAs we launch Soundstreams&#8217; new season, In Search of Regeneration, we celebrate music&#8217;s ability to transcend language and ideology. We invite audiences to explore diverse narratives, from the poignant letters of children in Letters to God to the spiritual resonance in Invocations. Music fosters understanding and empathy in these divisive times, reminding us that we all share common dreams, fears, and hopes.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Soundstreams 2024\/25 at a Glance<\/h2>\n<h3>Letters to God (October 24, 2024)<\/h3>\n<p>The music of Canadian and Japanese cultures is woven together in this concert experience that will feature 73 performers on stage, including <strong>Fujii Percussion<\/strong> (mother Mutsuko Fujii, and daughters Haruka and Rika), Soundstreams Choir 21, The <strong>Canadian Children\u2019s Opera Company<\/strong>, <strong>Gregory Oh<\/strong> (piano), and <strong>Ryan Scott<\/strong> (percussion). The program includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Akira Miyoshi<\/strong>\u2019s Letters to God, based on a collection of letters written by children;<\/li>\n<li><strong>R. Murray Schafer<\/strong>\u2019s 17 Haiku, which sets Japanese poems to music;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seasons<\/strong> by Toru Takemitsu;<\/li>\n<li>river woman by <strong>Melody McKiver<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Claude Vivier<\/strong>\u2019s Pulau Dewata.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Invocations (December 5, 2024)<\/h3>\n<p>The <strong>Gryphon Trio<\/strong> and guests like violin virtuoso<strong> Lara St. John<\/strong>, and singer <strong>Aviva Chernick<\/strong>, present works that invoke something beyond ourselves. Several of the works examine the word \u201cnign\u201d, which comes from Hasidic Jewish prayer traditions of the 18th century, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Avner Dorman<\/strong>\u2019s Nigunim (recipient of The Azrieli Prize for Jewish Music);<\/li>\n<li><strong>James Rolfe<\/strong>\u2019s Narrow Bridge (a world premiere);<\/li>\n<li>Aaron Copland\u2019s Vitebsk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The program opens with <strong>Vivian Fung<\/strong>\u2019s Prayer, (inspired by Hildegard von Bingen), paired with <strong>Amy Beach<\/strong>\u2019s Invocation. The acclaimed choir has been performing and touring the world for a half century, and make a rare appearance in Toronto. The program features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Music by visiting composer <strong>Tarik O\u2019Regan<\/strong> that includes The Spring (from \u201cThe Colloquy of the Ancients\u201d), a work that draws on heroic Irish legends;<\/li>\n<li>Six new short works by the participants in Soundstreams\u2019\u00a0RBC Bridges Emerging Composer Showcase, who will be mentored by Tarik O\u2019Regan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>with you and without you (March 22, 2024)<\/h3>\n<p>Soprano <strong>Danika Lor\u00e8n<\/strong> and Ensemble Soundstreams offer both classical and contemporary songs in a contemplation of love and loss, including pieces for voice and ensemble by Tansy Davies and Shawn Jaeger, and a work by <strong>Ana Sokolovi\u0107<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Ensemble will also perform instrumental works by Fanny Mendelssohn, Oliver Knussen and <strong>Matthew Ricketts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Garden of Vanished Pleasures (April 24 to 27, 2025) World Premiere<\/h3>\n<p>U.K.\/ Canadian director\u00a0<strong>Tim Albery<\/strong> created this new opera about English artist, designer, filmmaker and queer rights activist Derek Jarman. Composers <strong>Cecilia Livingston<\/strong> and <strong>Donna McKevitt<\/strong> wrote music to texts drawn from Jarman\u2019s journals, with an emotional range that spans from loss and longing to anger.<\/p>\n<p>The cast includes sopranos Mireille Asselin and Danika Lor\u00e8n, and counter-tenor Daniel Cabena, with Brenna Hardy-Kavanagh on viola, and cellist Amahl Arulanandam.<\/p>\n<h2>There\u2019s more&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>The Soundstreams TD Encounters <strong>free event series<\/strong> will continue at venues across Toronto.
