It will be the 18th season for The Met: Live in HD, broadcasting opera from Lincoln Center to the world <em>\u2014 <\/em>with three Canadian artists in starring roles.<\/p>\n<p>The Met: Live in HD series brings the storied New York City based company\u2019s productions to audiences across Canada through the Cineplex Theatre chain. High definition screening means that every detail of the dazzling productions will be on view, as they take place.<\/p>\n<h2>The Met: Live in HD \u2014 The Operas<\/h2>\n<p>The lineup for 2024-25 includes both daring new operas and beloved favourites, along with behind-the-scenes features that will appeal to both firmly established opera lovers and newcomers to the genre.<\/p>\n<h3>Canadian Talent<\/h3>\n<p>Naturally, Montrealer <strong>Yannick N\u00e9zet-S\u00e9guin<\/strong>, music director of the Met Opera Orchestra, features prominently in the list. He\u2019ll be conducting the Met premiere of two-time Tony Award\u2013winning composer Jeanine Tesori\u2019s new opera Grounded, starring Toronto-based mezzo <strong>Emily D\u2019Angelo<\/strong>. Offenbach\u2019s trio of lovers includes: American soprano <strong>Erin Morley<\/strong> as Olympia, South African soprano <strong>Pretty Yende<\/strong> as Antonia, and French mezzo-soprano <strong>Cle\u0301mentine Margaine<\/strong> as Giulietta. The cast will be rounded out by American bass-baritone <strong>Christian Van Horn<\/strong> as the Four Villains and Russian mezzo-soprano <strong>Vasilisa Berzhanskaya<\/strong> in her company debut as Nicklausse. <strong>Marco Armiliato<\/strong> conducts the <strong>Bartlett Sher<\/strong> production.<\/p>\n<h4>Fidelio (Beethoven)<\/h4>\n<p>Live: March 15, 2025<br \/>\nEncores: March 29, 31, April 2, 2025<\/p>\n<p>Norwegian soprano <strong>Lise Davidsen<\/strong> stars as Leonore, the faithful wife who sets out to free her political prisoner husband. British tenor <strong>David Butt Philip<\/strong> sings the role of fellow political prisoner Florestan, with Polish bass-baritone <strong>Tomasz Konieczny<\/strong> as Don Pizarro, German bass <strong>Rene\u0301 Pape<\/strong> as the jailer Rocco, Chinese soprano <strong>Ying Fang<\/strong> and German tenor <strong>Magnus Dietrich<\/strong> as the young <strong>Marzelline<\/strong> and <strong>Jaquino<\/strong>, and Danish bass <strong>Stephen Milling<\/strong> as Don Fernando. <strong>Susanna Ma\u0308lkki<\/strong> conducts.<\/p>\n<h4>Grounded (Jeanine Tesori \/ Libretto by George Brant)<\/h4>\n<p>Live: October 19, 2024<br \/>\nEncores: November 9, 11, 13 2024<\/p>\n<p>This new opera by Tony Award-winning composer <strong>Jeanine Tesori<\/strong> grapples with modern warfare and its ethical quandaries. Canadian mezzo-soprano <strong>Emily D\u2019Angelo<\/strong> stars as a fighter pilot, out of the cockpit and in Las Vegas due to an unplanned pregnancy. There, she operates a Reaper drone that rains death halfway around the world. <strong>Michael Mayer<\/strong> directs a high-tech production that looks at the effects of long distance war, with Met Music Director <strong>Yannick Ne\u0301zet-Se\u0301guin<\/strong> conducting.<\/p>\n<h4>Le Nozze di Figaro (Mozart)<\/h4>\n<p>Live: April 26, 2025<br \/>\nEncores: May 10, 12, 14 2025<\/p>\n<p>Conductor <strong>Joana Mallwitz<\/strong> makes her Met debut for Mozart\u2019s perennial favourite opera. It will be a Met debut for British-Italian tenor <strong>Freddie De Tommaso<\/strong> in the role of Tosca\u2019s lover, Cavaradossi, and American baritone <strong>Quinn Kelsey<\/strong> sings the role of the sadistic chief of police Scarpia.<br \/>\nMaestro <strong>Xian Zhang<\/strong> conducts the Met Orchestra.<\/p>\n<h4>Salome (Strauss)<\/h4>\n<p>Live: May 17, 2025<br \/>\nEncores: June 7, 9, 11 2025<\/p>\n<p>Met Music Director <strong>Yannick Ne\u0301zet-Se\u0301guin<\/strong> conducts Strauss\u2019s one-act opera in a brand new production by European opera director <strong>Claus Guth<\/strong>. The biblical story gets a setting in a Victorian era, with South African soprano <strong>Elza van den Heever<\/strong> in the starring role. Swedish baritone <strong>Peter Mattei<\/strong> sings the role of the prophet Jochanaan, with German tenor <strong>Gerhard Siegel<\/strong> as Salome\u2019s stepfather, King Herod, American mezzo-soprano <strong>Michelle DeYoung<\/strong> as his wife, Herodias, and Polish tenor <strong>Piotr Buszewski<\/strong> as Narraboth.<\/p>\n<h4>Aida (Verdi)<\/h4>\n<p>Live: January 25, 2025<br \/>\nEncores: February 8, 10, 12 2025<\/p>\n<p>American soprano <strong>Angel Blue<\/strong> stars as the titular Ethiopian princess in a new production by <strong>Michael Mayer<\/strong>. The pyramids and opulent tombs of ancient Egypt come to life in projections and animations. Romanian-Hungarian mezzo-soprano <strong>Judit Kutasi<\/strong> co-stars as Amneris, Aida\u2019s rival, with Polish tenor <strong>Piotr Becza\u0142a<\/strong> as the soldier Radame\u0300s. Met Music Director <strong>Yannick Ne\u0301zet-Se\u0301guin<\/strong> conducts.<\/p>\n<h4>Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Rossini)<\/h4>\n<p>Live: May 31, 2025<br \/>\nEncores: June 14, 16, 18 2025<\/p>\n<p>Rossini\u2019s comedy closes the Live in HD season for 2024-25, with Russian mezzo-soprano <strong>Aigul Akhmetshina<\/strong> in the role of the heroine, Rosina. American tenor <strong>Jack Swanson<\/strong> makes his Met debut as Count Almaviva, her secret love. Moldovan baritone <strong>Andrey Zhilikhovsky<\/strong> takes the titular role as Figaro.
