The very rare find is Beethoven\u2019s first draft of his Lied \u201cNeue Liebe, neues Leben\u201d, written to poetry published by German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1775.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeethoven manuscripts written before 1800 almost never come to market,\u201d said <strong>Bobby Livingston<\/strong>, executive vice president at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rrauction.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RR Auction<\/a>, the firm which sold the item. \u201cNo other complete autograph manuscript of this version is known.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beethoven&#8217;s Song \u201cNeue Liebe, neues Leben\u201d, with English subtitles, performed by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore \u201cLively, but not too much\u201d, the composer wrote in the score.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4zB3-cwcWT4?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>The manuscript consists of three pages across two sheets of paper. It\u2019s unsigned, and dates back to 1798 to 1799. The manuscript shows a kind of rushed, hurried writing for the composer\u2019s early version of the Lied. The melody and words are sketched out, with some of the bass sections, and the piano accompaniment at the end of each verse.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s notable also because there are elements that deviate from the version that was eventually published in 1810. The song as published belongs to Beethoven\u2019s Opus 75, and is the second of the series. The original version of the manuscript is catalogued as WoO 127 (Day 113).<\/p>\n<p>Goethe\u2019s poem deals with themes that are common in the romanticism of the era. In it, a young man expresses the idea of love as a force that restricts the personality; the cult of individuality was gaining in popularity during the 18th century. The Beethoven manuscript is one of several music and culture related documents at auction in Boston, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A signed letter Beethoven wrote to his secretary in mid-February 1826 sold for $75,000 (in it, he instructs his secretary in cryptic terms, &#8220;The matter must be handled cleverly&#8230;&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>A letter signed by author J. R. R.
