Toronto baroque music fans will get the chance to experience three live performances of J.S. Bach\u2019s music in a single afternoon, all while adding steps to their pedometers. The Bach Walk is a classic win-win situation, and it takes place March 16.<\/p>\n

The afternoon begins at St. Clements Church with the first recital of choral works. After the recital, the audience will take a walk to Glenview Presbyterian, and finally to Blessed Sacrament Parish for the third concert, covering roughly 1.5 km.<\/p>\n

Bach Walk March 16: The Details<\/h2>\n

St. Clements Church, 1 p.m.<\/h3>\n

A choral recital<\/strong> by the Choir of St. Clements<\/strong> and the Marion Singers<\/strong> that will include excerpts from Jesu, meine Freude, BMV 227, and Ruht wohl, from the Johannes Passion, BMV 245.<\/p>\n

St. Clement\u2019s Anglican Church was established in 1891, and the current structure was completed in the Gothic Revival style in 1925 by the architects Page & Warrington and Charles McKay Willmot. The church has a long history of nurturing and supporting music.<\/p>\n

Glenview Presbyterian Church, 2 p.m.<\/h3>\n

An organ recital with Peter Merrick<\/strong>. What would become the Glenview Presbyterian Parish was established in 1860. The current church was constructed in 1929, and is equipped with a Casavant organ.<\/p>\n

Led by Director of Music Peter Merrick, the music programs at the church include jazz services with some of the city\u2019s notable jazz musicians. A graduate of the University of Toronto (B. Mus. in Organ Performance), and with a Master of Sacred Music from Emmanuel College, Peter is a sought after organist recitalist and choir director.<\/p>\n

Blessed Sacrament Parish, 3 p.m.<\/h3>\n

An organ recital<\/strong> with Paul Jenkins<\/strong>. Blessed Sacrament Catholic Parish was established in November 1926, and after growing quickly in its first two years, construction of its permanent site began in 1929. The church cost $180K to build, a fortune at the time, but parishioners came up with the funds required to hire architect J. Gibb Morton to construct the Gothic Revival structure.<\/p>\n

Both an organist and tenor, Director of Music Paul Jenkins performs with the Toronto Consort and the Arcadia Ensemble, and has appeared with many of Canada\u2019s prominent early music ensembles. He\u2019ll be performing on a PT 347, a three manual, 47 stop Phoenix organ, a hybrid digital and acoustic instrument.<\/p>\n

To finish on a high note, there will be birthday cake<\/strong> to celebrate Bach’s 339th at the end of the last concert at Blessed Sacrament.<\/p>\n
