Highlights include a concert by international star Yuja Wang and a new Young People\u2019s Concert with Red Sky Performance, among a broad range of concerts and programming that spotlights the talents of the TSO musicians.<\/p>\n<p>Offerings include concerts for all ages and diverse tastes, including fresh new works along with favourites, and a star studded line-up of guest artists. Along with the music, there\u2019s film, dance music, and programs for young audience members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we unveil the full expanse of our 2024\/25 season, we are proud to highlight the array of programs designed to mirror the diversity of the broader Toronto community,\u201d says <strong>Mark Williams<\/strong>, Beck Family CEO, Toronto Symphony Orchestra in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the Classical magnificence of Mozart and Mahler, to the contemporary beats of Tina Turner and the enchanting melodies of Encanto, our season is a vibrant tapestry of contrasting cultural colours. At the heart of this mission is the season-long spotlight we\u2019re casting the exceptional talents within our orchestra. This spotlight will shine brightest on the various concerti for orchestra that we\u2019ve peppered throughout the season, savouring the individual virtuosity and collective brilliance of our musicians. In 2024\/25, it often involves concerti for orchestra by both contemporary and canonical composers.<\/p>\n<p>To kick off the season, the TSO will peform Pictures at an Exhibition, by Mussorgsky piece (orchestrated by Alexander Gorchakov) and Beethoven\u2019s captivating Triple Concerto, with Concertmaster <strong>Jonathan Crow<\/strong>, Principal Cello <strong>Joseph Johnson<\/strong>, and Canadian pianist and 2024\/25 Spotlight Artist <strong>Jan Lisiecki<\/strong> as soloists.<\/p>\n<h3>Highlights of the series:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Mahler\u2019s Symphony No. 4; Dvo\u0159\u00e1k\u2019s \u201cNew World\u201d Symphony;<\/li>\n<li>Selections from Bizet\u2019s Carmen;<\/li>\n<li>Beethoven\u2019s Symphony No. 3 \u201cEroica\u201d;<\/li>\n<li>Holst\u2019s The Planets;<\/li>\n<li>The score to Bart\u00f3k\u2019s ballet The Miraculous Mandarin (which will be recorded live for release on the Harmonia Mundi label);<\/li>\n<li>Mozart\u2019s Clarinet Concerto (featuring Principal Clarinet Eric Abramovitz), \u201cJupiter\u201d Symphony, and Requiem, among other works by the composer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Guest Artists<\/h2>\n<p>Two former TSO Music Directors return:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Former Music Director <strong>Jukka-Pekka Saraste<\/strong> conducts Mozart\u2019s Requiem;<\/li>\n<li>Conductor Laureate <strong>Sir Andrew Davis<\/strong> leads Richard Strauss\u2019s Also sprach Zarathustra.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sir Andrew<\/strong> will also conduct Mozart\u2019s Piano Concerto No. 25, performed by <strong>Emanual Ax<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The list of guest artists is long and varied.<\/p>\n<h3>On piano:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Angela Hewitt<\/strong> (Mozart\u2019s Piano Concerto No. 21);<\/li>\n<li><strong>V\u00eckingur \u00d2lafsson<\/strong> (Brahms\u2019s Piano Concerto No. 2);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Beatrice Rana<\/strong> (Ravel\u2019s Piano Concerto in G Major);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stewart Goodyear<\/strong> (his own Callaloo \u2014 A Caribbean Suite for Piano and Orchestra).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>On violin:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Timothy Chooi<\/strong> (Bruch\u2019s Violin Concerto No. 1);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Karen Gomyo<\/strong> (Piazzolla\u2019s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider<\/strong> (who leads Beethoven\u2019s Violin Concerto and conducts R. Concerto for Orchestra (Canadian Premi\u00e8re);<\/li>\n<li>Former TSO RBC Affiliate Composer <strong>Kevin Lau<\/strong>\u2019s Kimiko\u2019s Pearl Symphonic Poem (World Premi\u00e8re\/TSO Co-commission);<\/li>\n<li>A composition by Cree composer <strong>Andrew Balfour<\/strong>, created in partnership with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (World Premi\u00e8re\/Art of Healing Program Commission);<\/li>\n<li>New works by the TSO\u2019s 2024\/25 NextGen Composers \u2014 <strong>Amy Brandon<\/strong>, <strong>Andrew James Clark<\/strong>, and <strong>Sonny-Ray Day Rider<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2024\/25 TSO Spotlight Artists<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Gustavo Gimeno<\/strong> has selected two artists to be 2024\/25 TSO Spotlight Artists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the symphonic world, things move very quickly: guest artists come, rehearse, perform a few concerts in a single week, and go,\u201d says Gustavo Gimeno. \u201cBut through the TSO Spotlight Artists initiative, the orchestra and I are able to collaborate more extensively with a pair of incredible musicians each season, providing us \u2014 and our audiences \u2014 the welcome opportunity to grow closer to them, personally, humanly, and artistically. In turn, these artists develop a deeper relationship with us. In 2024\/25, I am thrilled to be able to introduce my TSO family to<strong> Anna Prohaska<\/strong>, a performer of great versatility, and am eager to showcase our long-time friend <strong>Jan Lisiecki<\/strong> in three programs that demonstrate his extraordinary musical dexterity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lisiecki will perform Beethoven\u2019s Triple Concerto, Chopin\u2019s Piano Concerto No. 1 and, over two programs, he will lead all five of Beethoven\u2019s piano concerti from the keyboard. I can\u2019t wait to introduce them to our musicians, and I know our amazing audiences are going to love them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Special performances<\/strong> include blockbuster films such as Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back with live orchestra, and a Lunar New Year celebration in February 2025. The <strong>holiday season<\/strong> brings weeks of programming from November 27 to December 22 that includes, of course, the tradition of Handel\u2019s Messiah with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, featuring the TSO d\u00e9buts of four soloists: soprano <strong>Sherezade Panthaki<\/strong>, countertenor <strong>Nicholas Burns<\/strong>, tenor <strong>Josh Lovell<\/strong>, and bass-baritone <strong>Enrico Lagasca<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Young People\u2019s Concerts<\/strong> offer family-friendly entertainment programmed by Barrett Principal Education Conductor &amp; Community Ambassador Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser. Concerts include beloved classics like Prokofiev\u2019s Peter and the Wolf, and new productions like the World premi\u00e8re of <strong>Sandra Laronde<\/strong> and <strong>Red Sky Performance<\/strong>\u2019s She Holds Up the Stars.
