His appointment was effective January 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew began to play the cello at the age of four. He went on to study music at the RCM\u2019s Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists. During his time there, he won the concerto competition, and performed as a soloist with the Academy Chamber Orchestra. Other honours include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Winner of the 2019 Canada Council for the Arts\u2019s Michael Measures Prize;<\/li>\n<li>Second prize at the Canadian Music Competition 2019<\/li>\n<li>First prize at the 2017 Toronto Kiwanis Music Festival President\u2019s Trophy Competition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Matthew\u2019s musical education included performing with the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. He toured Canada and Spain as featured soloist with the NYOC.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Christakos performs with Alison Kim, Violin, Hannah Corbett, Violin and Michael Langford, Viola: Dvor\u030ca\u0301k &#8211; String Quartet #10 Op. 51 in E Flat (NYO 2019 Chamber Music recital):<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CcJq3v1IRiQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>He then continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music, where he also served as principal cello in the Curtis Symphony Orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>His music practice also includes teaching.
