How can the music industry respond to climate change and sustainability? Organized by the Music Sustainability Alliance,\u00a0the first Climate Summit in the North American music industry took place in February 2024.<\/p>\n

The summit took place in Los Angeles, and saw roughly 300 attendees from across the music industry sectors participate in a day\u2019s worth of panels and discussions on everything from carbon emissions to making environmentally responsible choices when it comes to food offerings.<\/p>\n

The Music Sustainability Alliance is a non-profit industry organization that acts as a hub for the music business on environmental issues. Organizers had to move the event to a larger venue at the last minute due to a swell of interest, and the mood was said to be enthusiastic. Journalist and sustainability expert Joel Makower was the event\u2019s host.<\/p>\n

Sustainability & the Music Industry<\/h2>\n

A key concept to the success of any of climate-related initiatives is cooperation across the industry, including among organizations and companies who\u2019d normally be competing with each other. That kind of cooperation was in evidence at the summit, which saw panels with reps from diverse sources.<\/p>\n

The music industry itself may be small when measured against other global industries. However, as the summit underscored, it has a much larger influence because of music\u2019s role in shaping contemporary culture.<\/p>\n

One of the speakers is quoted (anonymously, due to the rules of the summit), in Billboard<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMusic makes culture,\u201d they said. It therefore helps determine \u201cwhat things in culture become normalized.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are a few basic areas where the music industry, and all its players, can look at efforts to achieve sustainability.<\/p>\n
