Mark Morris’s ballet based on music by Handel is coming to Luminato this summer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Atom Egoyan will direct an opera and Mark Morris Dance Group’s colourful and lively adaptation of George Frideric Handel’s L’Allegro, il penseroso ed il moderato<\/em> will get its premiere at the 7th edition of the Luminato festival in June.<\/p>\n

The festival announced its three Premiere Series events for this year’s festival, which runs from June 14 to 23. The tickets for these shows go on sale March 20.<\/p>\n

\"Atom<\/a>
Atom Egoyan directs Feng Yi Ting<\/em>, which goes to the MacMillan Theatre.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Egoyan’s project, which will be presented at University of Toronto’s MacMillan Theatre, is a contemporary amalgam of Sichuan and Beijing opera traditions. Feng Yi Ting<\/em>, based on the old tale of China’s Four Beauties who set off a rivalry between two warlords, had its premiere in the U.S. last summer.<\/p>\n

The show, which includes elaborate video and light projections, is sung in Mandarin.<\/p>\n

The Mark Morris Dance Group<\/a> show, which needs a large stage, is going up at the Sony Centre. Morris’s clever ballet has been in the company’s repertoire since 1988.<\/p>\n

Although Mark Morris is all about dance, there are some fantastic musicians that come with the Luminato performance, including Canadian sopranos Karina Gauvin and Shannon Mercer. The conductor is Britain’s excellent Jane Glover, who has led Messiah<\/em> for the\u00a0 Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and Mozart at the Canadian Opera Company.<\/p>\n

The third show, slated for Massey Hall, is an all-star 70th birthday concert of music by Joni Mitchell.<\/p>\n
