SUMMARY:Ottawa Chamberfest | Wallis Giunta & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Back from Vienna\, Chamberfest is delighted to welcome home one of Ottawa’s own international superstars\, Wallis Giunta. About the program\, Giunta says that “there’s an electricity that runs through [it] – a vibration\, a kind of current. The Ravel is incandescent\, the Chausson erupts in bolts of passion\, the Mazzoli sparks and shimmers\, the Bernstein lights the room on fire\, and the Berio is charged with a palpable energy\, building to a lightning fast finale. We take a tour of a great variety of vocal and instrumental chamber music\, spanning the late romantic period to the past decade\, with different constellations of players illuminating the myriad possibilities within the genre.” \nMoving from Maurice Ravel’s Trois poèmes de Stéphane Mallarmé to Leonard Bernstein to Luciano Berio’s folk song arrangements and more\, mezzo-soprano Giunta will be accompanied by a chamber ensemble brought together specially for her festival performance. With a “delectably rich\, silver-toned mezzo-soprano” (Opera News Magazine) “sparkl[ing] with vitality and musical humor” (Texas Classical Review)\, anything critically acclaimed Wallis does is sure to please. Add music monsters like pianist Hinrich Alpers to the mix and a great time is guaranteed for the audience and the performers alike! Catch Wallis now before she takes off on her next global adventure\, with her debut at Carnegie Hall just around the corner in 2024.

SUMMARY:Ottawa Chamberfest | Dark Butterflies: Braid\, O’Callaghan\, and Gryphon Trio
DESCRIPTION:Love\, rage\, heartbreak\, and joy come alive in this song cycle that pulls inspiration from ancient folk melodies of Sweden\, Turkey\, Ireland\, Asia and more. Composed by pianist David Braid for soprano Patricia O’Callaghan (who penned the text for this incredible work)\, Dark Butterflies will be performed in a new arrangement for soprano and piano trio with the Gryphon Trio. \nHailed in the Canadian press as “one of his country’s true renaissance men” (The Ottawa Citizen)\, composer and jazz pianist David Braid is a prize-winner\, amassing Juno nominations and awards\, two Screen Awards\, and the Ontario Foundation for the Arts’ prestigious prize: ’Paul de Hueck and Norman Walford Career Achievement Award for Keyboard Artistry’. Performed around the world\, his original music is described as “brilliant” (Montreal Gazette)\, “enchanting” (The Age\, Australia)\, “une force poétique” (Le Soleil) and “hauntingly beautiful.” (The Globe & Mail) \nToronto Soprano Patricia O’Callaghan is something of a wandering minstrel\, travelling across genres\, continents\, and a range of disciplines and passions. O’Callaghan’s ability to blend languages and musical genres together seamlessly while embodying whatever style she is performing in allows her to “…sing her diverse material as if it was always meant to go side-by-side..” (Chart Attack) Don’t miss the magic as Dark Butterflies brings together some of Canada’s favourite musicians for the reduction of an original orchestral song cycle that promises to be epic in scope and personal in delivery.
