SUMMARY:Tafelmusik | Bach's Brandenburgs
DESCRIPTION:J. S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos encapsulate all the qualities that affirm his brilliance as a composer. Creativity\, originality\, and boldness are on display in these groundbreaking concertos whose novel combinations of solo instruments create a kaleidoscope of textures. \nTafelmusik’s JUNO Award-winning 1995 recording of the Brandenburgs was described by NPR as “lucid and refreshingly pure\, like water drawn from a cool\, clear stream.” \nMore than 30 years later\, Principal Guest Director Rachel Podger and Tafelmusik invite audiences to revisit four of these seminal works—concertos 1\, 2\, 3 & 4—with newfound curiosity. Known as a musician who plays Bach “with an explorative sense of excited discovery” (BBC Music Magazine)\, Podger takes centre stage in the Fourth Concerto\, with its extremely virtuosic demands of the violin soloist. \nCompleting the program is Bach’s remarkable organ Prelude and Fugue in E-Flat\, “St. Anne\,” newly arranged for orchestra and premiered on Tafelmusik’s recent West Coast tour. “[The] arrangement exploited a kaleidoscopic spectrum of colour\, with textures and timbres shifting and recombining across the ensemble in thrilling interplay.” (The Strad)

SUMMARY:Esprit Orchestra | Superstrings V
DESCRIPTION:This program of works for string orchestra (with touches of percussion) celebrates artistic figures. To mark Arvo Pärt’s 90th year\, we present two works: one\, like a slow-motion sonorous waterfall in memory of Benjamin Britten; the other\, short and light\, inspired by the Eiffel Tower and Gustave Eiffel’s elegant designs. Louie’s fantasy reverie\, with cosmic motifs and traces of classical repertoire\, honours Glenn Gould. Eight solo violinists speed through Norman’s dazzling convergence of Italian Futurism\, Baroque\, and a racecar video game. Adding zest are Mark Fewer’s virtuosic improvisations in Hillborg’s tribute to Bach\, and a full-throttle string version of Purple Haze evoking Jimi Hendrix. \nfeaturing\nAlex Pauk Conductor\nMark Fewer Violin \nProgram \nArvo Pärt: Silhouette (2009/15) Canadian Premiere\nArvo Pärt: Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten (1977)\nAnders Hillborg: Bach Materia (2016/17) Mark Fewer Violin\nAndrew Norman: Gran Turismo (2004) for 8 violins\nJimi Hendrix: Purple Haze\, Arr.
