SUMMARY:Canadian Opera Company | Orfeo ed Euridice
DESCRIPTION:Orfeo’s wife\, Euridice\, has died. The Gods permit the grief-stricken Orfeo to follow his wife to the Underworld to bring her back\, on the condition that he not look at her until they are safely back on Earth. However\, Orfeo breaks the condition\, only to see his wife die once more. Amore takes pity on him and returns Euridice to life\, and all rejoice. \nBeloved for its noble simplicity\, Carsen’s stylized interpretation of the haunting Greek myth of Orpheus is minimalist\, stark\, and experimental. \nThe divinely gifted Orpheus draws on exquisite musical talents to beg the gods for the return of his recently deceased wife\, Euridice. Permitted to bring her back from the Underworld on the condition that he not look at her or explain why—at the risk of losing her forever—Orpheus embarks on a journey that proves\, once again\, the enduring power of love.

SUMMARY:Music Toronto | Tetzlaff/Tetzlaff/Doerken Trio
DESCRIPTION:The dynamic and deeply musically connected sibling duo of violinist Christian and cellist Tanja Tetzlaff are joined by the dazzling Kiveli Doerken for an evening of piano trio favourites. \nThis is the Music Toronto audience’s first opportunity to hear this new and wonderful incarnation of the group. In their first season with Doerken\, Vladimir Jurowski wrote in The Threepenny Review: “The accord among the three players was perfect; the way they picked up each other’s themes\, alternated their trills and pizzicatos\, occasionally joined together in unison\, and even left a few momentary silences was a pleasure to behold… the entire concert felt moving and triumphant\, joyful and sad all at once\, just as the best music should be.” \nThe trio was originally formed in 2004 with pianist Lars Vogt; Doerken joined the group after Vogt’s tragically early death from cancer in 2022. She has quickly more than filled the role with her own strengths and sensibilities.
