SUMMARY:Royal Conservatory of Music | ARC Ensemble: Hollywood Exiles
DESCRIPTION:The ARC Ensemble (Artists of The Royal Conservatory) performs music by Miklós Rózsa: the first modern performance of an early String Sextet\, a group of songs performed by the soprano Elena Howard-Scott\, and his exuberant Piano Quintet\, op. 2. The program\, titled Hollywood Exiles\, includes Franz Waxman’s entertaining Variations on Auld Lang Syne. \nComposed of the senior faculty of The Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School\, with special guests drawn from the organization’s most accomplished students and alumni\, the three-time Grammy Award nominated ARC Ensemble is among Canada’s most distinguished cultural ambassadors. Its focus remains the research and recovery of works that were suppressed and marginalized under the 20th century’s repressive regimes. A number of previously unrecognized masterworks are now rejoining the repertoire as a result of the ARC Ensemble’s work. \nARC Ensemble\n(Artists of The Royal Conservatory) \nErika Raum\, violin\nMarie Bérard\, violin\nSteven Dann\, viola\nThomas Wiebe\, cello\nJoaquin Valdepeñas\, clarinet\nKevin Ahfat\, piano \nFeaturing guest musicians from The Glenn Gould School

SUMMARY:Esprit Orchestra | IMAGINARY PANCAKE
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Edge Of Your Seat International Festival \nPre-concert talk at 7:15 p.m. \nDid you ever think that new music could make you laugh? It is not usual for a piece of new music to get an audience to at least chuckle but it is likely that the work by Bernhard Lang on this concert will do just that – and do it with a highly exuberant take on some of the most important elements found in the music of today. Also\, in this program Esprit again gives world premieres of new works for chamber orchestra and contrasts a solo work for piano with larger works by the same composer (Gabriella Smith) performed earlier in the season. A reprise of Harman’s Partita provides listeners the chance to hear Mark Fewer perform this refined virtuosic piece in the fine acoustic environment of Trinity-St. Paul’s. Another highlight will be the appearance of Wallace Halladay on saxophone as featured soloist in the Lang. \nFeaturing: \nAlex Pauk\, Music Director & conductor\nWesley Shen\, piano\nMark Fewer\, violin\nWallace Halladay\, saxophone \nProgram: \nQuinn Jacobs (CA): New Work (2020)\nBernhard Lang (AT): D/W 24 ‘Loops for Al Jourgensen’ (2013)\nGabriella Smith (US): Imaginary Pancake (2020)\nChris Paul Harman (CA): Partita for Solo Violin #2 (2019)
